Shit days at work

Post by Ryoki »

In this thread we post stories about shitty things that happened to us at work.

Last week one of our patients hanged herself in her room, which is facing the office i sit in. There was an alert on my tracer and what i generally do when that happens is look out of the window to spot the action. When the emergency response team got to her she was hanging there all blue faced and mostly dead and they fucked about with the curtains in such a manner that i could see everything for a short while. She was still alive when they rushed her to the hospital and they put her in an induced coma to see if she'd recover, but apparently her brain was damaged beyond repair and i just got the call that they pulled the plug.

Shit. She was only 26 and was one of my favourite patients, i'd always get a laugh out of her. She made a sport of shouting abuse at the staff in the most hilarious ways, but when she was in a good mood she was cool. Then she'd have a really sweet smile and attempt to stick up for her fellow patients, or go for walks in the garden with the clinic dog. It's not like we didn't see it coming, she had extremely heavy borderline and was always swallowing glass or eating batteries or cutting herself. But all those attempts weren't serious in the sense that they could actually work - until now.

Gah :( Second suicide since i started here, but i didn't actually know the first patient.

Sorry you had to go through that. I'm guessing for me personally my worst day at my job can't compare to the average day at yours. :!:

If it's any consolation, a friend of mine works at the Selkirk Mental Hospital in Manitoba, Canada and she's personally worked with that crazy guy who cut off a guy's head on a Greyhound bus a few years back...she's told me some insane stories about some of the shit that happens there....and yet she says she still loves her job.

I often wonder why people even go for fucked up jobs like that. You'd have to have a pretty callus personality to not let shit like that seep through to your personal life. Fuck that shit.

Yeah...sorry but I edited my post too late...Monday is a holiday here so I waked and baked and forgot to add my point...

But yeah...she's not callous at all and is really friendly and easy-going...so I think your theory isn't true. She's a nurse and she says the good they do there helping people day-in-day-out far outweighs the really bad things. So I guess that's how people sleep at night and keep going to work in the morning.

years ago (80's) i worked install /service for tripple a alarms in winnipeg (monkey outfit) one time whilst installing at grain elevator i ran a line through a 150' long anex that was built in the 50's maybe

the anex is seperated in like 15' storage sections

there was a 3'x3' hatch on the side and between each section was a 3'x3' opening, some sections had broken and grains blocked the access so i had to clear a way to crawl through some sections

there was rats and mice in there

just as i got to the end 150' the light died and i had to do the return in total dark

i mind over matterd it then but looking back

kind of a drag

ive had plenty of shit work days but thats just one that popped into my head
it is about time!

Here's my most dangerous day on the job:

When I was 17 (I drank some very good beer) I worked for 2 weeks as a carnie in North-Western Ontario sleeping out of a tent. Wow...that was a shit job. Anyway we had a crew of 5 of us putting together the ferris wheel during a rainy day. We were trying to get everything set up for the next day of sunshine and screaming kids.

We were putting the wheel together pie section by pie section and pushing the rig up as we went. The whole thing was held in place by two 14 inch car tires along the wheel permiter which, in addition to being the braking system, was also the drive system...and they were summer tires. Oh yeah I mentioned it was raining. So when we got to the halfway point the weight was too much for the steel-on-rubber traction and it all let go and came rolling around like a typical "tidal wave-based" amusment ride....basically half a pie trying to flatten itself out and balance its weight.

So we all heard the tires groan and squeal and eventually lose grip (it took about 2 seconds before the first warning and the release) and each of us reacted to 3 tonnes of half-wheel spinning towards us. I and the guy opposite me ducked flat on our backs Jim Carrey-style. I smashed the back of my head on a toolbox as I flattened out but I barely noticed. The two guys further towards the back of the truck literally dove off of the bed and onto the pavement and gravel below. While I lay on my back, I watched the big wheel continue it's spin down and then roll backwards as it leveled out and during the whole thing (which lasted about 5 seconds) I marveled at the guy who had climbed up to the wheel's hub (he was latching in the bolts there) as he wrapped his arms around the hub and walked perfectly foot for foot on the cross-struts of each section as it spun around. He could have miss-stepped and fallen and hit everything on the way down before landing on me or someone else...but he handled it like a champ.

Some or all of us could have died right then and there, but nobody got seriously hurt.

My worst vacuuming day of work was when I playfully ran over my girlfriend's toes with the vacuum cleaner and I forgot about the spinning brush inside. She was pissed at me for a few seconds there and I felt so guilty I took her out to dinner to apologize.

I use to repair 'black boxes', navigation and communication electrical equipment on cargo vessels. Most of the time the job was mint, pretty much working on the bridge under AC conditions and getting served food and beverages like their job depended on it. But i also had to go up to the mast to repair radar arrays and all, but that didn't bother me so much.

But one day, there was an issue with the steering house electronics and being that it is a 24/7 industry, I was called to make a repair at 3am. I had to go down to the engine room (engine room as big as 2 houses put together), at 3am half asleep trying to troubleshoot a system i never seen before through a fucking half assed diagram. The engine room, was unbelievably loud, hot and everything was oily and greasy, and fucking dangerous. had to communicate with koreans on the bridge with a shitty in house phone system , under extremely loud background noise with someone who didn't even really speak english. not to mention that everything down there is a caricature of what you'd expect. Huge rusted on bolts and screws, in hard to get places etc. That was a test of wills i tell you.

Fibreglassing a 1/3 scale Soyuz space capsule upside down on a 40 degrees C summers day was pretty much the shittiest day of my life.

[lvlshot]http://airandspace.si.edu/exhibitions/gal114/SpaceRace/images/soyuztm.jpg[/lvlshot]

This thing needed the bottom connected to the rest of it. So imagine it was like sealing the lid onto a pyrex bowl.

I don't know if any of you have ever used fibreglass but it stinks and in high concentrations it makes you vomit. It's sticky and because it's an exothermic reaction it speeds up in the heat as well as generates heat itself, if you get it on your skin it's an irritant and burns. Time was against us because we had to laminate it all together while it was still wet because if it set in a warped shape in the moulds then the two sections would never sit together. It also had to be structurally sound because it was being dropping from a crane into a lake to simulate the splash so we were using this special combi-mat glass which is horrifically annoying to get to consolidate.

I had a full body chem-suit, wellies and an air fed respirator as well as a traditional organic-gasses facemask underneith as backup and I could still smell the stuff. We'd made it in two overall sections, essentially the bowl and the lid and then turned it upside down to how it is in the picture. There was a hole in the bottom of bowl as well as the top so my legs could stick out. They then dropped the lid over the top with me inside it and I had to fibreglass it in the fucking dark, with nothing but a headtorch and barely enough room to turn around. It took about two hours and I swear it must have been 60 degrees inside there and I was in a totally insulated rubber suit. About a gallon of water ran out of my wellies at the end. Shit times.

At least no one died, tho. Sorry Ryo :(. You taking any time off?

i once worked in a cubicle on the 20th floor of a high rise, sitting in front of a monitor all day getting carpal tunnel. anyway, one day the UPS guy comes by with a jiffy bag addressed to me, and when i opened it a mobile phone fell out into my hand and immediately started ringing. when i answered it, it turned out to be the leader of a terrorist cell i'd been researching on the internet as part of a private project, and he was really keen to show me around his boat in the sewer (yeah whatever, fucko). he told me the FBI had arrived to send me to Gitmo for looking at terrorist websites, and when i looked over the top of the cubicle there they were, in black suits and ray bans, over near the elevator and that bitch Janice from HR was pointing them in my direction. i was ready to shit bricks at that point, but luckily the terrorist guy on the phone knew exactly what to do, and he gave me instructions on how to get through the cubicles without being spotted, past the photocopier and into an unoccupied office, like he was Yoda or something

this is the part where it started to get weird. the terrorist guy told me to open a window, climb out, and use some nearby scaffolding to get to the roof. presumably he had a chopper waiting up there, or maybe he was full if shit. either way it didn't matter because there was no fucking away i was doing that, and i threw the phone out of the window. then the FBI guys came and grabbed me, and dragged me down to the street, and one of them whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said fresh and there were dice in the mirror. they then took me to a small white room and the head g-man showed me all the incriminating dox they had on me and offered me a deal to drop dime on the terrorist guy in return for not bumming me, or something like that. i hate cops, so i flipped him off, then they all got mad and bummed me anyway like a bunch of faggots. later on i woke up with a sore arse, but least i was finally home, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

I was told that a lawyer walked in on behalf of one of our clients and told us that our client had killed himself and that our contract with him was nullified. What a dick.

On a more personal note, the other day, Acrobat stopped working for some random reason so I uninstalled and reinstalled, but the day after I found that Photoshop kept crashing. So I said fuck it, and went out for a bike ride. Man, working from home is hard shit.

My worst day/days was during Hurricane Irene last year. Vermont got hit hard and I work on the road all over the state, so I got to see the devastation as it was happening. I spent 3 days driving for about 10-12 hours each day, so I saw as things went from bad to worse, and many times I couldn't double back on my route because roads washed away behind me.

One particularly close call happened on a back road that ran alongside a river and a small cliff face. As I drove up a hill, some 10 feet ahead of me the road suddenly vanished into the river, which had cut underneath the road as it diverted itself around a rockslide. It washed out the ground below the pavement, which caused the whole road to fall into the river and take a telephone pole with it. If I hadn't been paying close attention, I would have driven right into the hole.

-45 celcius , low visibilty and the helicopter could not pick us up at the end of the day.
at 2 pm I realized that me and my crew would be stranded in the treeless high artic for the night.
our emergency kit consisted of 1 sleeping, a small stove and fuel.
we dug a snow cave with our snowshoes. We all got horribly ill from the fumes, so much so that one guy trying to warm up kept digging the cave all night. he accidently made us a new door. Wind now was coming in and it got deadly cold. Our clothes were hard as rock, going out of the cave was suicide so we just covered up the new hole and tried to live.
highlight of the night was sharing a boiled frozen orange juice.Greatest tasting drink I ever had. It was a long and miserable silent night.
When morning mercifully came I heard a helicopter but it was bigger then the one that dropped us off. I knew it was a 204 helicopter and We were dropped off with a 500. My heart sank but the loud thump thump was getting closer and closer until it landed close to our drop off on the frozen lake. We ran like nuts to the helicopter jumped in and we were saved. The smaller Hughes 500 could not make it through the ice fog so from another diamond camp they sent the 204. It had dual controls so I flew the helicopter for 10 minutes.
Finally landed at camp, had breakfast and a hot shower then played Red Alert till supper. I wish this was my only adventure but I have had many near death experiences worst then this but this was the closest to freezing to death. The rest were grizzlies, black mambas and saving peoples lives.
Still love this job but I leave it to others now to risk their necks.
