Dishonored
Anyone heard of this?
Bethesda's steampunk assassin action game. Sounds like it has quite a lot going for it - best summed up as BioShock + Assassin's Creed + Dickens

Re: Dishonored
I know they're all calling it "Bethesda's" game, but it's REALLY Arkane's. Bethesda are just publishing it. Arkane made Dark Messiah of Might & Magic and Arx Fatalis.
Painting it with the Bethesda brush attaches a certain stigma and expectation to the game.
With Arkane at the helm, you can expect a lot of Looking Glass influence (indeed, Harvey Smith is involved).
It's what RPS horribly refer to as an "Immersive Sim", a term which doesn't do justice to the game type. Expect a bit of Hitman: Blood money, a dash of Deus Ex, a smidgeon of Thief and garnish lightly with a sprinkling of System Shock 2.
If the style looks familiar, they've used the same guy for Art Direction as HL2 did.

Why would you use bows and arrows while in a mech?
(You've got power!)

Talk about missing the mark.
Or are those just strange stilts? Doesn't look like it.
If they've got a good reason for them being like that, you should be able to use them yourself, otherwise I'm calling it a lame
ripoff. (I.e. combat gameplay-wise.)

DTS, proving once again that imagination is a limited resource on the planet and someone's stopped dishing it out.

Re: Dishonored
watch the video DTS.
Looks good, I like the look of the tech (especially the stilt walkers, they're very cool - makes sense it's directed by the HL2 guy, a real air of the combine with them and that rail-car thing).
First person tho? hmm.

eww, that's some ps2 shit right there. They should just not bother releasing a screenshot if it looks utterly garbage.

Re: Dishonored
fallout 3 is about 4 years old, and if I remember correctly, that game looked pretty good back then.

Re: Dishonored
just because some morons could get a few still head models to render on the fly , doesn't mean that it (the v-card) could run them under normal circumstances, in a gaming environment. Imagine walking into the citadel commons area with detail like that everywhere.phantasmagoria wrote:four years ago this was capable, wtf is going on:

plus lets not for get the burden 'frozen in time' consoles have become on game development.
Re: Dishonored
If games were developed for PCs, a lot of things would be possible. Everything is dumbed down for consoles running hardware from 7 years ago so obviously there can be no real evolution.
Re: Dishonored
^ This (omg... I agree with Mazda).
Though to be fair, I'm pretty sure the screenshot above is supposed to be a crack whore, so while the lighting/specular/etc. could be much better, she's not supposed to be a particularly pretty lady.

Re: Dishonored
Question. What happened to gameplay > gfx ?
All I read about lately is 'oh this would've looked (ergo been) so much better if it was on pc and not running on old hardware'.

Re: Dishonored
I think the issue is that the consoles are really stopping the development of graphics and its been evident for quite a while. I don't think there has been a game recently on any console of the PC where I have thought "omgah" other than the Unreal 4 tech demo.
That tech is available now just not being used because if a PC game was released that looked that good the console kids would kick off about the shite graphics on their current gen consoles.
The graphics leap when the next gen comes along is going to be huge.

Re: Dishonored
It isn't just graphics, but everything else that consoles are holding back. Draw distance, AI overhead, number of bones/keyframes in animation rigs, physics resolution, etc...there are a billion things that could be much better on gear that isn't older than Moses.
Re: Dishonored
If there were more rival consoles it wouldn't be such an issue.
Re: Dishonored
I don't think there's many games using that technique, but it's only applicable in a very specific type of gameplay.Memphis wrote:There should be more games with Resi Remake's approach to graphics, 'cos that still looks ace today. Pre-rendered backdrops and all the processing guff thrown into the characters could look fucking incredible. Has this been done in any other games since the Gamecube days?

Re: Dishonored
OK so I picked this up and at first I was underwhelmed...but shit just got real and it is super fucking enjoyable. It's stopped me playing Halo 4 and will keep me from unwrapping Blops 2.
Like.
Like.
Re: Dishonored
I read it sold pretty good so I guess that means plans for a Dishonored 2 are being made right now.

Yeah it performed above expectations
It's wonderful now I'm a bit further in and have some "abilities"
