actually, the guy with the highest IQ in the US is a bouncer or somesuch. classic case of bored in school, complete asshole, etc. kind of like Good Will Hunting, but more realistic because girls don't like him.Transient wrote:But yea, she'll never be asking, "would you like fries with that?"

oh, and the guy claimed not to be able to afford college but i call bullshit on that. i could've gone to a state school for free and i'm a standard deviation or to closer to average than him.

Actually, IQ is mostly based on your ability to assess and deal with information, think on an abstract level and problem solving skills. It has little to do with actually knowing factual information or something like that (and it certainly isn't about knowing facts about the current time you're living in). So I actually think that if Newton were IQ tested today, his IQ may have very well been a very high one.GONNAFISTYA wrote:IQ has basically been described as a test of "knowing stuff from your time period".Eraser wrote:Same IQ isn't the same as knowing just as much as.
With my original comment I meant to say that even though this girl may have a high IQ it doesn't mean she is a genius at the same level as Einstein, certainly not at her current age. I'm sure the article goes on yapping about how this girl is just as smart as Einstein, but given the fact that she is a 4 year old, she cannot be compared to Einstein. One day she might rival his knowledge and possibly even his influence on modern science, but before that day comes, a whole lot needs to happen. She needs to have an interest in science for starters.

Re: Stephen Hawking
I think of IQ sort of like being able to play a musical instrument well. I doesn't mean you're able to write good music, although people who can write good music are often good at playing an instrument too.

Re: Stephen Hawking
that makes no sense... playing an instrument is 90% practice and repetition... with a hefty amount of self interest on the subject. Also, Eraser is wrong and confused, but I don't have the time to bother explaining, also correcting people all the time makes you look like a cunt and closes people off from future contributions on subjects, so I avoid it.

Sorry...that might be what it says on the wiki page, but it's not how professionals feel about the test.Eraser wrote:Actually, IQ is mostly based on your ability to assess and deal with information, think on an abstract level and problem solving skills.

Re: Stephen Hawking
I've seen dozens of articles claiming "child prodigy" and other attention-grabbing words for people who are only good at playing a musical instrument. If you want to focus a test of intelligence on one skill that a person has, then I'd counter that argument by stating that "Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is better than the average person at playing hockey"...too bad that he's still a lunkhead in everything else. Being good at one thing (which most people are) isn't a measure of overall intelligence.ALMighty wrote:I think of IQ sort of like being able to play a musical instrument well. The reason I think this 4 year-old is special is because she is smart, skilled and talented in several aspects. But we still won't know just how smart she is for several years.
Re: Stephen Hawking
I don't know, maybe it doesn't. But I think people have tendencies to want to think in certain ways; when you're thinking about something, it's sort of like practicing an instrument. Some people think about IQ-test-like things a lot so they get better at it just because they've spent time thinking in that way unconsciously.Tsakali wrote:that makes no sense... playing an instrument is 90% practice and repetition... with a hefty amount of self interest on the subject. People who are blind get extremely good at hearing things. I think the same thing goes for IQ. If you're mentally blind to lots of information, you're going to get better at what you do understand. I've met people who have a very hard time picturing things in their head, but at the same time they're great at problem solving.
Btw, what's the difference between online tests and 'real' ones? I did the test at mensa.dk and got 130, but I guess it's bullshit huh?

Re: Stephen Hawking
I've always found IQ tests to be a bit hit or miss, and the notion of IQ itself seems strange too. It's a bit like trying to define what consciousness is... how can you define intelligence?
In my mind, the brain is all about connections, so learn as much as you can about anything and everything, and try to connect everything to everything else you know. Take time and challenge yourself, the more you do it the easier it will get. To me, people that lack the drive to learn something new every day are more or less wasting their time here. Think of the human race as an ant colony. Your task is to learn everything that the race has achieved thus far, and try to improve upon it in some way before you die.
RE: Musical instruments vs. IQ tests: I think the two have some similarities. While I can't say I've ever met anyone who has thought "IQ-test-like-things" in their spare time (wtf even is that?), it stands to reason that there are probably people out there that think like that. There's also a fairly substantial difference between playing an instrument and playing music, as Almighty has mentioned. Tons of people can play guitar/piano/drums just fine, and can do a bang up job of covering hundreds of songs. Ask them to improvise for a few minutes? Most of them will just give you a blank stare. To me, none of these people are real musicians, they've just taken the time to master the technical aspects of said instrument. Which is a commendable feat in itself, but these people are lacking a real insight into what is actually going on. A certain quickness of the mind. Which is something I think IQ tests try to get at, quickness of the mind, the ability to recognize, adapt to, and solve vast arrays of problems. But again... how the hell do you define intelligence?
I'd say, forget worrying about fuckin' IQ tests and just read voraciously.

Re: Stephen Hawking
i just meant that iq is nothing like playing an instrument. I never mentioned iq tests, and I agree with you that iq tests are something you can improve on, so that only means that iq tests are a joke. And if you were to take iq to be simply processing power, then the importance of iq simply diminishes into something fairly trivial. So, one would rather be driven, and inquisitive instead of simply having a high iq...beneficial on pretty much any situation.
My ex was brilliant , but simply lazy and wired all wrong...a situation that would make jesus eat kittens etc.
