Re: Awesome
Well I guess this is more of an update then?
But thanks for the original link.

Re: Awesome
Sweet... I would totally eat a mammoth.
Re: Awesome
there was an article talking about zoos in the near future sporting exhibits of cloned species that have been extinct up to 50,000 ago. Something about having sufficient amounts of DNA to work from. SO yeah mammoth being one of the live exhibits they mentioned.
Not exactly a jurassic park, but cool nonetheless.

Re: Awesome
It'd be cool to go see mammoths and sabertooths and dodo birds. But it wouldn't be fair to clone them and stick them in a cage. I'd like to see them on several hundred acres, safari style...
Re: Awesome
the article also talked about a complete rethinking of the idea behind zoos. Something about how the roles will reverse, by having visitors travel through enclosed spaces as they visit different areas of an "open" zoo environment. I didn't want to get off topic so i didn't mention it.
Re: Awesome
that sounds similar to my zoo concept, only in my version the zoo is a continent and the enclosed space is a land rover
Re: Awesome
yes, but that's not a viable solution to the entire populous. people like going to the zoo, they like to see exotic animals, but not for a $3000 ticket price.seremtan wrote:that sounds similar to my zoo concept, only in my version the zoo is a continent and the enclosed space is a land rover
now, the rover thing might work,... not sure why they didn't mention that obvious choice, but it seems that a bunch of vehicles roaring around in high volume would be a pretty big disturbance for the animals. Maybe if they had a theme-park like electric buss that might work.
Also, I've never been to a safari, but I'm guessing that most species run off from any moving vehicle , thus never really getting the chance of having too many close encounters. By having a stationary enclosed space, the animals will be more likely to ignore it, so peeeps will have a better chance at a closer look.
Re: Awesome
Nope. Animals become very accustomed to vehicles rather quickly, once they learn they're not dangerous...
Re: Awesome
Here in the Netherlands we have an open nature park like that. While it's relatively small, the animals aren't caged and you drive through the park in your own car. Two weeks back or so, there was an item on the news that some dumb 10 year old kid got out of the car and got himself mauled by a tiger or something.Tsakali wrote:yes, but that's not a viable solution to the entire populous. people like going to the zoo, they like to see exotic animals, but not for a $3000 ticket price.
Anyway, I'm sure parks like that exist in other places as well. It's like a mini safari. It's better for the animals and way cooler than a conventional zoo. So yeah, it's not like the real thing in Africa, but then again, it also costs you probably 1/100th of the price.
edit:
oh, there's actually an English Wikipedia page about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safaripark_Beekse_Bergen
