new great way to re-buy your media!!
it is about time!
Re: new great way to re-buy your media!!
Cloud computing is great if it's just a backup of the data that you have on your computer, so you can access it anywhere and have the security of having a remote backup of your stuff.
However, when it comes to "owning" data/media that resides only on the cloud, what assurances do we as consumers have that says that we still get to keep what we bought on the cloud if the company changes or discontinues the service, or goes tits up completely? I don't trust the subscription based model unless I get to have a local copy of what I purchased. It hasn't worked well in the past, I doubt it will magically work well now unless you sell it to stupid people.
Also, fuck Walmart.

Ownage of the data is a major issue that can really screw people over in an age where Facebook simply states outright that it owns every picture that users upload to it...so that`s a shitstorm waiting to happen the next time a psychopath runs one of these cloud companies.
But the bigger issue for me is why would anyone allow their data to be held by someone else when you can store it locally? Terabytes of portable, external storage can be bought for next to nothing, comparatively slow transfer speeds over the internet and - most importantly - no internet connection needed. And yet another rant against utterly stupid consumers: it makes no sense to me that people think a mandatory internet connection to your data is a good idea when these are the first people to bitch about Ubisoft`s always-needing-an-internect-connection DRM.
Sorry but cloud storage is for morons.

My 3 TB external hard drive works just fine, TYVM.

is that usb1, 2, 3 or firewire ?Transient wrote:My 3 TB external hard drive works just fine, TYVM.

USB 3. My only complaint is that I can't start my computer with it on or else BIOS thinks there's an OS on it and it locks up. It's a minor complaint, but I guess it's not "just fine", eh?
Damn, that would suck if it was USB 1. Might as well back up my files by hand on paper, it would go quicker.

Re: new great way to re-buy your media!!
Can't you change the boot order in BIOS?

Re: new great way to re-buy your media!!
Nope, it's some bug with Western Digital's My Book series that use USB 3.0. Even if I changed the boot order, it would still lock up. Or so I've been told; I never really researched a cause and solution.

Don't bother, Seagate and WD are still keeping prices horribly inflated even long after the Singapore floods. The cost of TB/$ right now is through the roof.mrd wrote:Transient wrote:My 3 TB external hard drive works just fine, TYVM.![]()
I need to get me one'a those!
Re: new great way to re-buy your media!!
I got mine for $130. That seemed reasonable.

Missed opportunity there, Mazda. Oh, and Thailand.Captain Mazda wrote:Singapore floods.... through the roof.
Seagate manufacturing facilities weren't affected by the flood so their prices are actually pretty decent. They also have no obligation to mark their prices any lower than they need to since there is little competition, but they aren't inflating them either. Others like Hitachi (not like you would ever buy a Hitachi) are almost double in price.
