No more so than other places. You can do it on the cheap and imo have a better time anyway. If you stay in local Ryokans and get a Foreigner's Rail Pass it's actually quite cheap to stay and move about once you've paid for the flight. The good thing about the Royokans is the proprietors can usually recommend cheap places to eat and drink as well as nice attractions and any crazy Japanshit that should take your fancy. You should go.
