The dishwasher's post raises a good question I have been arguing for years.

I prefer forced savings via the government and like getting $11 - $12K back yearly where other people tell me that it's not beneficial for me to let the government collect interest on my money. Anyone have an opinion on this? I would assume my interest on the extra $1k a month would total somewhere around $150.00 over the course of the year...

My argument is I would rather lose the $150 and have a lump sum of $12K every January.

Yeah it's the same discussion with "vacation money" we get here. Here in the Netherlands, included in your paycheck is an 8% bonus which is called "vacation money" (literally translated, not sure if there's a better term for it in English). My previous employer would pay this 8% every month while my current employer (and I think most employers) save up the monthly 8% and pay it out once a year (with May's paycheck).

I actually like getting twice the amount of money I normally get in May while it's not exactly beneficial to me (I could've gotten a year's worth of interest on that money if it was sitting on my bank account instead). I guess to me it's like living on a slightly lower standard (but a mostly negligible difference) and getting a nice bonus once a year.

adding the 8% to your monthly paycheck might bump you up the tax scale, not to mention theirs.

Why? Tax scale is based on yearly income is it not?
