Oakland occupy movement finally gets violent

Post by Intimidation27 »

It appears the revolution is starting. And guess who led the charge?

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/29/us/oc ... kland.html

It's war now guys, Arab spring will be nothing compared to the war of the classes and social beliefs (Marxism vs right wing republicanism) in America. The police state must end, cops can't be the jury and god anymore in this country.
“Officers were pelted with bottles, metal pipe, rocks, spray cans, improvised explosive devices and burning flares, the police said.” Officers responded with smoke, tear gas and beanbag projectiles. Twenty people were arrested.

Most of the arrests occurred in the evening, when large groups of people were corralled in front of the Downtown Oakland Y.M.C.A. on Broadway. At one point, one group of protesters broke into the City Hall building.

On a livestream broadcast on the Web site oakfosho.com, dozens of protesters could be seen sitting cross-legged in darkness on the street in front of the Y.M.C.A. Their hands appeared to be bound behind them, while police officers stood watch. Occasionally the protesters sang or cheered.

The events were part of a demonstration dubbed “Move-in Day,” a plan by protesters to move into the vacant convention center and use it as a commune-like command center, according to the Web site occupyoaklandmoveinday.org.

“We were going to set up a community center,” said Benjamin Phillips, 32, a member of the Occupy Oakland media team. “It would be a place where we could house people, feed people, do all the things that we have been doing.”
After a series of violent episodes, including a clash in which a Marine veteran of Iraq suffered a fractured skull when struck by a projectile in a confrontation with the police, Ms. Quan relented and permitted the protesters to return to the plaza. But two weeks later, in response to fears of renewed violence, she ordered the plaza cleared again.

Mr. Phillips, who said he is a veteran of the United States Air Force, spoke Saturday night from his home on Grand Avenue where he had stopped to rinse tear-gas residue from his contact lenses. He described the scene in front of the Y.M.C.A. as “terrifying.”

“This is disgusting, because this is not the way that America is supposed to work,” he said. “You’re supposed to be able to have something like freedom to assemble and air your grievances,” he said.

“It’s bizarre,” he said of the police reaction. “It’s not something you expect to see in the United States, and we’ve seen it over and over in Oakland.”

Iconic Image Against the Police State

While browsing for news today I found an image that made me realize that the movement I have been hoping for really began. It began in Occupy Oakland part II so to speak with this image representing the new boldness needed to make the movement turn into a revolution it was destined to be:
Image

As you can see, this image is poised to be the iconic image of the movement that is now turning revolutionary. Finally, protestors are seeing that only through some show of force and boldness will cops back down and the government following them. Finally, we have a man bold enough to spit in their faces figuratively with a V for Vandetta type of message.

This man should be automatically honored as one of the leaders of the movement or a spokes person. This is the type of rallying the troops need in order to boost boldness and resolve. We need to show them right in their faces we have no fear. If we see them kicking or beating someone or pepper spraying rows of defenseless people, we need to strike back. This image shows this type of message the movement needs.

The fact of the matter is we live in a police state and a police society where cops are rarely held accountable for their actions. Look at the Rodney king video all the way back to 1993. If no one taped that incident who would have defined multiple armed cops beating someone down? With the incredible punishment rates and fear of reprisals in the form of court fees, jail terms, and more, no wonder it is taking this long for people to get the resolve to resist.

However, this image shows faith that even with all these arrests, even with courts forcing people to pay for their own unlawful detentions bankrupting them and taking away people's jobs (how can you work with high bails and while you are sitting in a cell?), people still will fight back. Young people in particular, who have less to lose, will fight back for their rights.

It was an incredible thing to do I imagine, if you didn't know that others around you would rally with you and fight as a collective unit. But this protest shows it only takes one bold individual or one spark, and they will. Like in the Arab spring you heard of these warriors throwing back rocks and other things in their means that they had in their disposal. Yet the same media that that

Personally just for pointing out my opinion in this column, and supporting the movement, I wouldn't be surprised if they start monitoring me or arrest me. They did before, without me saying or doing anything about it. That's their motto: bring fear onto you and not expect you to strike back in any way – whether that is through the power of the written word, the media, or otherwise.

The bottom line is that the movement has every right to turn this country into a civil war or to start another French revolution. If any of you read anything about this revolution, it was precisely based on a similar principle than the Occupy movement: namely, that rich aristocrats were exploiting common people and ruining their nation in the process.

After watching any of the Republican debates, what I really wonder is how any of those people are walking around and even supported. These people who openly admit hate for other ethnic or religious groups, and want to do away with free rights in general. How can anyone not want to fight back against this type of thinking? The police and state are interwined – hence the term of police state. When you fight back against cops, you are also fighting back against these republicans with that form of thinking.
