the admins at the time did a shit job of looking after this place on a really basic level. there should've been a backup that could be restored after the downtime - people are coming into the mapping forum and asking questions now that could've been answered with a quick search of what was a wealth of content. maybe to a lesser extent, the same is true of the Q3/QL forum. that content was irreplaceable and its loss contributed to the decline of the game's popularity and these forums. dave, raw, iD, gamespy - whoever it is was that was responsible for maintenance, fucked up really badly. i know that marrying psychos and taking mediocre pictures of schoolgirls that clearly find you repellent are important things, but half an hour downloading some files or fetching an sql dump every now and again would've done us all a really big favour.

you go and do that, we'll catch up.
this is still a great place to come and chat - and it's not that abusive compared to other forums. you can look back at the 'good old days' when GD was one big pally circlejerk, but most of the internet was like that back then. now the internet (and gaming) is fractured across different platforms and the world has changed. 'communities' like this one won't ever spring up again - you should enjoy what's left of it while it lasts.
that said, it might be an idea to merge mac discussion into t+t and quake 4/quake wars into id legends. they're like rusting cars on the kerb in front of tsakali's barber shop.
