Sky brushes removed, mysterious textures

Post by EmeraldTiger »

Anyone ever had this happen before? I chose a new sky for my map, then I come back to it and discover that all brushes which used the new texture disappeared. In addition, a bunch of mysterious, undefined textures appear at the top of the texture browser bearing powers of two as their names.

I was forced to revert back to beta 1 of my map during construction and re-use it as it was not affected, although this definitely took away a lot of work I put into stuff like clipping rock faces, etc. I want to know how to avoid this issue in the future, all I know is it happened when I started changing my sky textures.

I think something like this happened to me as well, a few times.

I just make sure I'm always pressing ESC when I'm done with something. And if I'm not sure if my ESC is working, I will select something that is currently in my view and press ESC to see it be deselected.

This. Get used to it. And get used to it in any other editing program of any sort. Always "back out" of what you're doing before you type, drag or click anything else, especially if you are new to the program. All it takes is one erroneous hot-key to fuckin' ruin your day :olo:

EDIT: To draw an analogy, when I'm working with multi-track audio sessions in Cubase, I found this fact out the hard way many times before I finally drilled it into my head to hit ESC after everything. If I'm working on a selected track (say, track 48) and then scroll up to track 2 (thereby shoving track 48 way, way off the visible display) and decide I want to drag it over by 16 bars... well, track 48 is gonna go with it and I'm probably not even gunna notice until I listen and go "wtf is going on!?!?"

Another thing to help is make daily/hourly backups.

^ Automate that, with versioning.
