Have any of you ever created any concept art or rough design sketches or any design documents for some of the maps or models you have created? If so, I'd love to see some of that stuff and how it compares to how it eventually turned out in-game.
I have a small design document I initially wrote for the EntityPlus map I'm working on now, but I barely used anything from it because it was really over-ambitious. Once the map is done, I might post some sections of it if people are interested.
edit:
one thing I can show (although I've showed these screenshots here before) is before and after screenshots of my McKinley's Vengeance map (from 2001). The "before" screenshots show the initial texturing of the map during construction. At one point (before release) I decided to redo the texturing. The "after" screenshots show the new texturing, which is how the map was released.

Concept art?
Re: Concept art?
It's cool to see the before and after texturing for such a classic map.
I liked the review r3tina wrote about it... memories
I myself draw/sketch the layout of a level before i start mapping.
It usually takes a couple of days to work it out.
If i don't i get confused while mapping and it takes too much time
and it will reduce my mapping drive.
With a sketch i have always something to go back to and something to keep me going.
Still lots of things can change the layout between sketch and map.
I sketch in 2D so the verical axis in my drawing is flat.
(and i only draw 1 sketch for the whole map)
So any upper-floor i draw will be on top of the bottom one (wich become more unclear).
When i actually map the 3D becomes more visible (duh) and i will make adjustments for game-flow and drawing flaws.
A few years ago i didn't sketch, just go on inspiration.
One of the maps I build was takkie3dm1.
Check the levelshots on ..::LvLworld here: ..::LvLworld takkie3dm1
I kept working on it (on and off for 5 years) and recently i came up with the 'final' version.
So takkie3dm1 is kind of 'concept art' for jas3rev1 (the new level)
You can check the new map and images on my blogpost here:

Re: Concept art?
The "after" shots certainly look more realistic, Eraser.
Edit: Apart from that blue effect around a white light. Just noticed that.

Re: Concept art?
I always did sketches of maps before starting them. I would do an overhead view of basic structure and maybe some items, then do some rough sketches of important areas from a side or angled view. Don't have any of that stuff anymore though... haven't made a map for years and years. Been getting the itch every now and then, though. Been thinking it would be neat to write and record a custom track to go along with the map, as well... hmmm...
Re: Concept art?
Cool stuff o'dium. You can draw pretty good!
