The house approved the bill....here we go.

Opinions?

I'd like to see some people's photoshop work of what they think the wildlife refuge will look like with "environmentally friendly" oil exploration....

It isn't just the allowing of drilling in ANWR- the act of which I despise- but also the tax breaks for energy companies, protection of MTBE-producing corporations, and delay (no pun intended ) of MTBE phase-out that make this bill a blow to America.

My mother was diagnosed yesterday with cancer at a relatively young age, and to think that the government is now going to give tax breaks and subsidies to companies that knowingly dump this carcinogenic chemical into areas in which it will contaminate ground- and therefore drinking- water makes me sick in ways I cannot describe.

I can't wait until they get a nice operation set up, and the corporations start selling it to other countries. That'll be great.

I also love how the energy bill has a provision to let us drill in the wildlife refuge, but doesn't do anything to make us less dependent on foreign oil in the long term.

Oil drilling is not as evasive as they'd like you to believe. Environmentatists really like to give the worst case scenario all the time. I live in place where oil and gas wells are common, and the companies have done a good job keeping the sites small and well maintained. I camp in these areas and the wildlife could give a rats ass to what we do, they go where they want. :)

hies :) I couldn't stay away forever heh.

We'll just wait and see about the whole drilling thing; from what I've heard, if it happens, it won't be for 5-6 years. By then, hopefully we'll have progressed on other energy options.

Once they actually start, it will take at least 4-6 years before it's online and producing usable oil.

The pollution, however, will likely begin immediately.

I really hate congress now as much as I hate Bush. They're all so fucking transparent. They should just do away with the pretense and give corporations naming rights to government buildings. Rename the Capitol building THE ENRON DOME and suchlike. Hell, go one step further and call the congressfags "The representative from Haliburton" or "the Senator from Lockheed" instead of continuing to lie and act like they represent the people of their states.

This energy bill is just like the recently signed personal bankruptcy law, which was a direct result of six years of credit card company lobbying. Screw private citizens and give tax breaks and incentives to big business.
