It was dubbed with western actor's voices, and it was very poorly done. They tried to closely match the mouth movements of the actors, and that just made the dialog sound artificially stilted and halting. Also, the pace was slow and jerky.
Sets and cinematography were beautiful, the CGI wasn't too bad, and the fight choreography was the usual Chinese, over the top nutty goodness. It just couldn't hold my interest.
I watched the whole thing but reached the same conclusion. It had some visually stunning moments but the dialogue and awkward pacing killed it for me.

Hot Fuzz = 8/10

These guys are damn good. I didn't like this as much as Shaun, but still great. Amazing production value as well. Looking forward to their third

Dunno, I just found it to be very touching. The sibling relationship was portrayed with pure genius and what ends up happening to them was masterfully executed. It wasn't just a single event that destroyed them, just a gradual slide down, losing their mother, running out of food/barter stuff, getting thrown out of the relatives' house, having to resort to stealing, getting caught, etc. Seita's desperation, especially when he gets caught stealing. OMG! The way she was burying all the dead fireflies. The candy tin.

It seems it was wrongly overhyped for you, I don't know why you would expect it to be "messed up" on the scale of something like Elfen Lied? .. [which I had to Google to find out what it is].

Damn, sounds like the dub spoils it.
I've got the Blu Ray, so watched it with subtitles, and thought it was outstanding. A real sumptuous epic.

Ghost Writer: 6/10. Better than average but not by a whole helluva lot. Kim Cattrall loses her British accent about 10 minutes into the movie, wtf.

Interesting. The second version you saw Doombrain, did it contain 26 minutes of extra (footage) film not on the original?

They are promoting a Director's Cut vestion here oy in about 3 weeks. Yes I will go and see this again
I don't think that's out yet and i thought it was only an extra 8 mins?

anyway i'll get it on BluRay, i'm not convinced by 3D and prefer to watch in 2D. I don't like how the 3D specs take all the shadow detail out.

rented a few DVDs:
Clash of the Titans - 4/10... i guess. it was pretty fucking awful, but since it's at least a somewhat self-conscious remake of a B movie... whatever.

Hot Tub Time Machine - 2/10 - if i were fucking old and thought a guy wearing a vintage-80s ski suit was the funniest shit in the world, i might think this was a funny movie. maybe. fuck john cusack for ruining himself over and over.

An Education - 7/10 - i was amused, despite it being predictable (especially the ending). just very well executed at all levels, imho.

oh right, saw Dragon Tattoo and Girl Whe Plays with Fire. 9/10 and 7/10 respectively. the latter felt a bit like it was rushing through material from the book. still a good movie, but maybe not as good an adaptation. no fucking clue how hollywood is going to manage an adaptation, but it will clearly fuck everything up in order to avoid pissing off the censors.

Dead Man Walking = 9/10

Yea, I know it's old, I've had it on my list for about 10 years. Powerful performance by Penn in the last half hour.

Zombieland = 7/10

Not quite as good as Shaun, but had its moments. The main character was very George Michael Bluth-like, though I'm not a huge Woody Harrelson fan.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo = 6/10

Was decent I suppose, for me it didn't quite live up to all the hype.

The Runaways - 7/10 - good story, good music (if you're into that kind of thing), and even surprisingly good acting from Stewart. Dakota Fanning bouncing around looking sexy is a little creepy, because in the back of your mind you know she really is only 16... but so's the character. i guess that's the point. best casting in the movie was for Lita Ford, imo. looked just like her.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - 7/10

This movie had way too much hype for what it was. This isn't some masterpiece of cinematography that redefines the standard in film-making.

Regardless, it was ok. Not something I'd watch again but it was entertaining.
