The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that, having reached an agreement that a new, unified standard would be the best thing for the industry, Sony and Toshiba are now in the process of designing the new standard, which seeks to take the strengths from each medium and combine them.

yar, celebrated yesterday by wanking on my remote. smart move, since this would be the ONLY way the format would really take off fairly quickly. it won't be as dramatic as dvd (nothing ever has been), but it should do very well once it is released. i'll be waiting though for second gen players since the first gens will be out the roof.

Yeh, very good indeed. They've learned from the VHS vs Betamax struggle.

wasn't so much a struggle as much as it was Sony shooting itself in the foot with only 1 hour long tapes, albeit smaller than VHS.

that certainly wasn't what consumers wanted. Sony had a huge leg up (read headstart) and blew it.

the first betamax's were only 1 hr.

yours was extended betamax. they tried "selling" that to the public but it was too late - VHS were the consumer's choice by the time Sony realized the size limitation and brought out the extended.

cds used to be in carts. it sucked. prolly the reason why they gave them up ;)

they did do some crap with the blu-ray coating though which made it more scratchresistant that dvds..

ofcourse, that doesnt save it from those idiots who never put their cds n dvds back into their cases :A
