Looks like a pretty sick update to me. A4 chip, amazing new screen, better battery life, dual-cameras with flash, thinner, sexier.

He means it is out just before the Evo so the 6 month contract thing is meant to bait people who may go for the Evo

the HCT's the first real competitor, they need to grab users now. the early upgrade path will grab market share for apple.

Nice article on why Apple's concept of a closed platorm with the iPhone OS is doing so fine while it's only introduced 3 years ago. Forget that it's published on appleblog.com, it's not conjured with fanboyism.

Keypoints are:
1) Direct relationship with the customer (you chose Apple before you chose your carrier). Most people also have invested in music they've bought in the iTunes Store, securing the relationship.

2) Uni-platform investment.
iPhone OS is not fragmented like RIM's or Android's. It's one OS for the iPhone and iPod Touch (untill OS 4.0 comes of course). (Third-party) Developers are getting return on their investment due to the popular App store and are more likely to invest than on other platforms.

Another argument is that Apple's churning out new hardware and software every year around June. Making it predictable for consumers and developers. Anyway's, it's about the software (apps, music) and not the hardware. My 2 cents.
iPhone won't go away any time soon and by the time people have lost interest in the iPhone, Apple will surely come with something even better. However, I'm still not convinced that from the point of view of the developer, iPhone is the most accessible platform out there. For me as consumer, I'd hate the fact of selling my soul to iTunes. I want my music DRM free thankyouverymuch.
You're kinda tied to iTunes when it comes to the iPhone. It's not a bad thing for managing your apps and media. I have my iPhone 3G jailbroken and I've installed 3rd party apps that are and never will be approved for the App store, simply cause they're extending the functionality in many ways.

P.s. music you buy in the iTunes Store now is DRM free. I still prefer to buy CD's and rip them. Or use Spotify with a premium since last week. Damn, that's great and it bypasses iTunes by using a separate app in the iPhone. 10 euros a month.

More excited about the GM seed for OS4. Might need to give that a try...

Ah. Makes sense to cash in on the hype of this release too.

With what, 4G/Wimax - the 8 mp cam?

The screen resolution is lower, it has only 802.11g wifi.

Not a pissing contest, but I'd rather use the iOS4 instead of Android 2.1

Maybe 6 months upgrade special is because they're trying to get everyone to renew their 2yrs before apple announces iphone for Verizon?

res is lower.. like you're going to notice the massive PPI change on that small screen? No, you're not.

Also, 2.2 supports N which the Evo has hardware wise with a broadcom bcm4329 . (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC-Evo- ... own/2979/2)

Did I tell you I love this phone?

Sales of iPhone4 are going to be remarkably less than expected...

+ "Hunn where are you?"
- "I'm at home chilling"
+ "SHOW ME!"
- CRAP.

When will they learn to put the ear speaker on the backside of it so that the screen doesn't get covered in face oil. Seriously

Not a problem for me personally as the only iPhones I use are my friends', but still it's something that no one has done yet and it seems so simple. Why have the screen side touch my face when the back side could? I guess if you're fingering the screen constantly it's dirty anyway.
