They mix it up at then end.urgrund777 wrote:that test could be considered humourously racist itself... odd how "failure" "horrible" was on the right side, same as all the blacks.... and "success" "wonderful" was on the left side along with all the whites
...how friggin' long does it go for? I started mashing E and I to hurry it up then quit!

this is such a load of crap :icon19:
they couldve used apples and oranges instead of black n white.
what they do is, they create a temporary force of habit on you - left is good, right is bad - and then they turn it around on you. it has nothing to do with the picture or word they show you, just how fast you adjust to their game

I fail to see how accidentally pressing the incorrect button a few times trying to associate words means that I have a slight preference for whites over blacks. I didn't make any errors when associating faces, just words, and that was only due to the 'Good' and 'Bad' being on different sides.
Odd test.
Odd test.

that concern came up in class, and the prof said that the results still showed bias even when you are conditioned the other way first.MKJ wrote:this is such a load of crap :icon19:

There was some talk within social psychology that these 'preferences' (operationalized through simple perceptual/recognition tasks) may be 'hard-wired' to a degree...a slight 'in-group...out-group' bias that affects the way information is processed, stored, and accessed. The idea being that this 'bias' is a universal feature of the way humans cognitively develop.
Since I left the study of psychology some time ago, I have no idea if this line of research went anywhere, or was debunked, or was consumed in a cloud of explosive gayness.
Calling this feature 'racist', if it exists, is a little over the top, but its implications for understanding racist tendencies and behavior is obvious.

the point that's important to take away is that we have these implicit biases, based on our cultural environment, that we are largely unaware of.
And these biases do have an effect of systemically oppressing minorities who are on the short end of this bias.
For an interesting look at one insidious form of racism, check out Claude Steele's "Threat in the Air"
http://www.nber.org/~sewp/events/2005.0 ... he-Air.pdf
I made a summary of the theory behind the experiments, if you don't wanna read the whole intro.

The results from the experiments are shocking btw.

Why do you prefer an Apple over an Organge - are you 'fruitist'?
Why do you prefer rugging up at winter as oppossed to swimming at summer? Are you seasonist? Why do you prefer jazz instead of deathmetal? Are you genre'ist? ...etc ...etc ..etc ....racism is just another one of these questions in my opinion, and having preference is a natural, healthy part of life.
So long idiots don't start wars... or squash the Orange beause they like Apples more, or burn (not CDR burn :P ) the Jazz CD because they like Metal more - then there is nothing wrong with prefering to associate with a race more than another.... O_o

The point at issue is not whether some preferences are harmless or amoral, but whether the ones based on 'race', ethnicity, nationality are benign and/or value neutral.urgrund777 wrote:

This is far more complicated and morally loaded than a simple taste preference. Ask a white supremacist why he prefers white folks....believe me, he's won't shrug his shoulders, look wistfully up at the sky and mumble "just because". He'll give you a whole list of reasons (that he sincerely takes as relevant)...some of these reasons may even be held by relatively sane folks in the larger culture (to some degree or other). Whether any of these reasons ARE legitimate is of course what studies in race relations have been concerned with since the get go.
