Post by Anthem »

Thanks for posting. For those who are lazy:
Before I announce the winners I wanted to thank everyone for helping me to get this competition together:

-thanks to the competitors for making some awesome maps
-thanks to the judges for being impartial and flexible
-thanks to everyone who provided feedback, participated on the forums, or said hi on the irc channel.
-thanks to AMD, ATI, and Sapphire for providing prizes

And now, onto the winners:

Third Place:
Simon "sock" O'Callaghan
Focal Point - download

Second Place:
Tom "Phantazm11" Perryman
Substation 11 - download

*drum roll*

First Place:
Justin "StormShadow" Ingels
Devilish - download

Congratulations to the winners!

Winners, please contact me with your addresses so I can send you your prizes!

The official map pack will be released on January 16th. Any changes to any maps can be submitted to me up to that deadline.

Here are the links to download each judge's scores, demos (if taken), and comments:
Anthem
Hell5pawn
Hipshot
Key21
Tig
SyncError - "If anyone wants feedback or comments from me, they are free to contact me." Please come to the IRC channel to chat with him if you are interested

And you can download my Excel spreadsheet where I compiled the scores and did the normalization here. I used standard deviations to normalize the judges scores to put them onto a level playing field and then used standard score calculations on each judge's scores. The maps were then ranked by the highest average standard scores and the winners were determined.

Thank you to everyone that participated in this competition. It was a good experience for our community, and I foresee many events like this taking place in the future. If you think you would be interested in events such as this, I recommend registering at http://forums.noghost.net/cgi-bin/ib/ikonboard.cgi.

Thanks.

Congrats on the winners.

Maybe I'm just not reading properly, but is there a download link to all the submitted entries?

Technically yes, but that is just the pack of the maps released before they were fixed up after judgment (meaning that many of the maps were still in beta form). There will be a NoGhost Mapping Competition Map Pack released on January 16th (as long as everyone has their fixes done by then).

The link to the Beta map pack is: http://download.maverickservers.com/Qua ... tition.zip

I will post a link to the new one upon its release.

Some maps have bugs (primarily clipping bugs or z-fighting), but they are all essentially playable.

Did any judge look at the map within the editor?
Storms map has totally no clippin (besides the outer walls).

Or did anyone had a closer look at the scores:
points for sounds, where no sounds are!?

Creativity-points for monochromy!?

Your map also neglected to clip correctly in several spots.

Creativity was less for the color and more for the structure / gameplay attributes. His map was quite different from everyone elses in the competition.

Also, I did look at a few of the maps within the editor. This was essentially for playability purposes, though. However, I voted for Focal and Phant over storm because I didn't like it as much. That doesn't mean it wasn't a great map. :)

several spots vs. whole map; that must be judged (different).

What about the sounds?

Your clipping issues were much more noticeable.

Also, to be honest, I only actually heard one sound - the music replaying over and over and I turned it off.

Your map was great, though. :)

I see what you're saying. However, there wasn't a really specific piece-by-piece declaration of the point values for each sub-category. The judges were capable of weighting the areas of each category as they felt best. Sound obviously wasn't a huge factor considering sound wasn't in a lot of the maps.

Instead of posting here about it why don't you ask the judges how things were weighed. I don't think any of them really read here.

I am a judge as is Hipshot. We are capable of answering these questions. :)

Kid: This means judges outweighed sound by everything else. Storm's map was very clean cut. Sounds obviously would have been a plus, but the rest of the map was good enough to reward the extra presentation points regardless of sounds according to me at least. There's no doubt his map deserved a top 3 position.

Givin extra-points arbitrary, isnt fair!-

Some partipitians were lookin for sounds, askin for permissions
and even makin their own sounds!-
Therefore a map without sounds can not get points for that.

(Im not talkin about my map, im speakin for all partipitians.
But my map and others have everything, what a good map needs,
and they have clippin, they have sounds and they have a title when the map loads.)

silence is a sound too.

you think The Exorcist or Blair Witch would be scarier if it had constant musical score and/or ambient sounds?

Words of wisdom, yo.

Sound may add to a map, but it is definitely not a requirement. That's why the guide said "Sounds (if included)". If any of the maps without sound earned a perfect score for presentation, it's only because the graphics were just that good.

Sounds can even detract from presentation if they are bad enough. But I'm sure if your map included sounds and they fit the atmosphere nicely your presentation score earned a few extra points overall from them.

graphics # sounds!

Some maps have 5! points for "unobtrusive sounds",
although they do not have any sound.-
Maps with sounds have only 2 or 3 points instead.

I'm going to suggest that you post about these things in NoGhost's forums. We will try to the best of our ability to answer your questions and help solve some of the problems for the next competition.

Thank you to everyone that participated. It was a great adventure for us, and after some tweaking we will have another competition of the sort.
