Doorway "Decoration" - thicken function

Today I started experimenting with the "thicken"-function. I tried to make my doorways look nicer with some curves and experienced the following issue.

When I tried the cap selection there was a small gap. I thought I could fix it with vertex but it seems like I can't :/

I never used thicken that much so far, but you may very well have hit one of the limits of this command. I.e. you might need to re-create that "thick" edge using a narrow and bent "simple patch", and then align the "cap" to the outer edge of the simple patch.

Also... select the "thick edge" choose the appropriate grid size, then go into vertex mode, select (drag-click) all vertices, and then hit Ctrl+G to align the vertices to grid. I am pretty sure that thicken quite often created patch vertices that are *off* grid.

Just a side note...you're using the wrong type of patch caps there...always go for inverted bevelcaps, not inverted endcaps. Thicken can be useful, but more often than not tidying things up takes longer than if you simply started out creating several patches.

thicken has potential to leave you off the grid (or has that changed?)... I would avoid using it, and just use patches and modify as you go

its because u used an endcap and not a bevel
when u use an end cap it will bend the edges down and then when u try to vertex like u did you'll get that same result.

Thinking of bend mode: Is there any detailed (and probably pictured) tutorial available that explains bending patches using "b"? I'm getting sick of trying that on my own and always setting the wrong axis or points to bend patches around. And as it has been said, thicken definitely got its limits.
If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.

Yeah, that might be neat... only recently even discovered that mode (GTKradiant Tips thread)... though from playing around with it I have the feeling it's not really useful.

If anyone actually uses it all the time, some example applications would be nice, in the GTKradiant Tips thread.

Already thought of that and tried it too several times, but there are occasions where it's extremely frustrating to fuck around with every little vertex there is on a patch just to discover that someone is still wrong in the end... after 15 minutes - or hours. Don't know if it wouldn't be even more frustrating to have the ability the change all verteces at once by bending it and to discover that

You are aware that using Ctrl+LMB-drag, in patch vertex mode lets you select more than one vertex (turn them blue) to then move them by dragging them or using nudge (Alt+Cursor)?

Moving around a few vertices is not really that big a deal, IMO, unless you are actually editing something 3D that is *really* complicated.

moving multiple control points is the way to go...then it's easy...and keeping everything on grid and the scale to the power of two.
Lol, glad I'm not the only sad person online at xmas :P

Hanging around, and sadness are not necessarily correlated. Personally, I just can't concentrate on mapping or doing something else and the forum is relaxing :toothy:

Yes I do know that, and the problem I have right at the moment considering patch editing isn't *really* complicated but it still gives me some headaches every now and then. Probably gonna post a screenshot of it to show what I mean.
