The last movie you saw
Re: The last movie you saw
Also saw Up.
Great story telling with genuine funny, emotional stuff that manages not to get too melodramatic, and of course the superb animation you'd expect from Pixar.

Surrogates: 5/10
The movie just dragged on and on and on. Rather disappointing compared to the trailer (which was made up of mostly scenes from the last 5 minutes of the movie or scenes played in reverse). There were parts of the movie where you think, "oh good, I see potential for a really cool action sequence or a chase scene or some Bruce Willis/Die Hard style yippy kyae ass kicking" only to be let down as the scene is already over and it's back to dialog or Bruce Willis wandering around doing shitall. Too many bits of character that weren't tied into anything was just loose threads like the end of a mop.
District 9: 7/10
Good use of CG that blended in well with actual footage to look almost real. Interesting development of the main character. It is by far more entertainment value than a satirical social commentary of Apartheid-esque problems of human (alien) rights and racism. You have a slight sense that this is wrong and unethical, but then you forget about all that fluff as human and alien guts are exploding from alien death rays... bzzzztt-splat! The documentary style shaky-cam works for the beginning of the film where you are following the guy around as he does his job and everything is believable, but quickly falls apart later on since there is no conceivable way that the camera man could be following the protagonist around once he starts getting into trouble. It's like jumping back and forth between a participant of the events to a 3rd person observer of the events and then back to participant. It ruins the illusion of either realistic documentary or fast action movie.
Zombieland: 8/10
I had no idea what this movie was about or who stars in it (other than zombies) so I was expecting something more of an action/horror like Dawn of the Dead. Didn't know it was a comedy. Quite enjoyable with some pretty great laughs and surprises. I liked the "survival rules" popping up in places. Someone else mentioned that it's like a road trip movie except with zombies, and indeed it is. It reminds me of Left4Dead where the zombies are more like cannon fodder, justification to shoot stuff up, rather than anything scary or particularly frightening. Excellent cameo midway through the movie. By the end of the movie I was craving for a Twinkie.
7zark7: 9... been meaning to watch that!

i actually saw the movie in an interesting situation. i saw the movie and the next day i went to yasukuni shrine in tokyo. it was cool to see the movie and then the next day to see a lot of the actual letters and random stuff in the museum. they had some letters there, pictures, official olympic medal certificate that the horse guy received and all sorts of things.

Milk - 7 / 10
lost a point for being one of those movies that would have the same impact even if condensed into 45 minutes.
Was interesting to see what was happening only around 30 years ago considering the current state of San Francisco.

Re: The last movie you saw
Terminator Salvation - fucking terrible
Just...boring and all characters were unanimously unsympathetic.
I think I even prefer Terminator 3, which is saying a lot.
Guess director McG is to blame, seeing the shit he cranked out earlier.
Also
Black Dynamite - pretty good blaxploitation parody
I usually cringe when watching spoofs, embarrassed by their desperation to be funny.
But this one hits the nail on the head in comedy, but also the retro feel, moreso than the grindhouse movies, imo.

t4 was good for the noises the terminators made. i like the idea of robots using dubstep to communicate.
black dynamite - 8/10
what plan b said. 'shaun of the dead' for blaxploitation.

Objectified: 7/10
Documentary on industrial design, what makes good design, how do designers think and some of the issues facing modern design. The overall film felt centered upon the Apple/Ikea/minimalism movement and frankly felt a bit like an extended commercial in parts. They touched upon commercialism and how it is about creating the "next best thing", disposable and replaceable only to go back to interviews about designers wanting to create something of lasting value. The juxtaposition just made me feel as if the film was a little hypocritical and designers really didn't know what they want or what their customers want and are just satisfying their clients. On the plus side, the interviews were well conducted and a rare look at the tinkering brains of some of the industry's best designers, and seeing how they merge form and function to create interesting products.
Also recommending Helvetica, Gary Hustwit's film preceding Objectified.

The Men Who Stare At Goats - 8 / 10
Re: The last movie you saw
9 - 6/10
5 of that is for the animation, which has a really nice style to it. the story itself was twaddle.
ink - 6/10
a man searches for his lost daughter in a dreamworld populated by smug wankers with dreadful combat skills.
too creepy and violent for kids, too boring for teenagers, too childish for adults - but there were some great visual effects and it was very well put together for an indie project. looking forward to whatever they do next.

9 - A bit shit
Very cliche, uninvolving story.
Relatively poor animation (like the ugly texture squashing in the puppet face fabric when trying to get the puppets to 'emote').
The whole deal made me think I was looking at a compliation of cut scenes from some ps3 game.
Zombieland - Highly enjoyable
Spot on, in every aspect.
Funny when warranted, gory when warranted. And funny and gory when warranted.
It's weird, though. Movies like this almost make a zombie apocalypse look desirable.

Up: 7/10 Pretty good...not quite up to Wall-E or the Incredibles for entertainment value, but heartfelt and gorgeous. The dog characters owneth.
Re: The last movie you saw
9: 7/10
A bit short. Characters seemed distant and lacked emotion, dialog was pretty sparse. It seemed a bit hollow. The animation was technically simplistic, but the movie was impressive on a creative level. For an all star cast, I was expecting more of a story, better dialog and acting. As it was, I can't help but feel that it was something of much potential but clearly lacking much needed polish.
Inglorious Bastards: 7/10
Not as gory as I thought it would be (especially for Tarantino). Rather predictable plot. Good acting for most of the cast, though I think Brad Pitt was a little too over the top with the accent. It felt a little nondescript, I couldn't really call it an action movie, nor a war movie, nor a drama, nor a comedy. It's a mixed bag of all of the above that doesn't entirely blend well.

2012: 3/10
All points go to the quality of the special effects. Talk about a waste of $. DO NOT spend money on this. I didn't either and I still felt like I lost something. The acting was good but the story was so farfetched that it was downright horrid.

Re: The last movie you saw
2012 = 0/10 - At 2 and a half hours it's as much a test of endurance as it is a test of psychological pain threshold: you cannot wait for it to be over. Easily the worst - and dumbest - movie to come out the last few years. The VFX were cool, but there was nothing really there that you won't get bored of after 20 seconds or so on-screen...as it steals nearly every disaster shot/sequence to appear on film from the last 15 years. Even the flooding sequences were boring as it's all been done before and - in most cases - to better effect than this POS. Nowhere near as epic - or "popcorn entertaining" - as promised and when its over leaves you feeling dirty for having watched it.
If, like me, you're really curious about seeing this film for the "action shots" you'd be better served simply watching the trailer and sparing yourself from the nightmare that is yet another example of Roland Emmerich pissing in the audience's face. If you must see it, find some way to do it without paying because as r0n1n has already said, this film doesn't deserve to make any money at all...lest you be cast into the fires of hell for buying a ticket.
Skip it if you have any self-respect.

Re: The last movie you saw
2012 seems like it might rival 10,000 B.C. as the worst movie I have ever seen. I'll definitely be Netflixing this 4 months from now.
Re: The last movie you saw
The 4th Kind - 6/10
Not a bad cheap scare flick. The way it was filmed in conjunction with the "real footage" was cool. Did anyone know about this Nome, Alaska story before this film? Wondering what the real story is on this...

Re: The last movie you saw
thanks for the 2012 warning, i was actually thinking about seeing that.
Re: The last movie you saw
Taken - 6/10 - liam neeson totally miscast as some kind of blacks ops asskicker. the vengeance-seeking is fun, but the script is pure cookie-cutter and the story is about as implausible as you can get
che - 8/10 - pretty epic stuff. the way biopics should be done
the day the earth stood still - 1/10 - while we're on the subject of 'worst movie ever' (2012, 10,000BC etc), this is my own nomination in that category: a clammy mixture of weak moralism, emo weepiness and john cleese
x-files: i want to believe - 4/10 - more like 'x-files: i want to milk this cashcow until its udders crumble to dust'. mulder, scully, conspiracy, aliens, billy connolly. you get the picture
flashforward - 5/10 - not a movie, but anyone watching this? it's one of those shows that manages to stay watchable in spite of itself. if they cut out the radio friendly songs and montages of all the characters staring at the floor thinking about their feelings and just stuck to the fucking story it would improve ~162.5%
also, dominic monaghan as a stud bedding a foxy babe on a train by talking quantum physics? fuck off
