my DIY project

Post by Giraffe }{unter »

We have this void behind our couch due to the rounded front to our living room. We had a flat table back there, but I didn't like it. We've been searching for about 3 months for something, but we can't seem to find anyting in the $300.00 to $1,000.00 range that fits that area due to the angle of the windows.

As you can see it angles in towards the back, please ignore the wires, you won't be able to see them with the table there ;). So I bartered with my landlord trading a new office chair back support ($15.00) for some 1/2" thick Mohagany slats, that connect with tongue and groove, then spent a few hours creating a table.

My tools were limited to a broken circular saw, a pencil, angle ruler, and a router. I glued and screwed the slats together to create a 7 foot long 20 inch wide table, then cut the angle for the window. I finished it off by putting a design on the edges with a router, sanding and staining.

It's been about 10 years since I have created anything with wood, I think in the future with some better tools I can create that coffee table we've been searching for.

Total cost for an 84" x 20" console table Legs + trade for wood, and stain -> $65.00

Not bad man. Got a pic of the legs? Did the angles fit right? I always fuck up the angles a little.

The legs are adjustable tubular legs, nothing fancy since they are going to be between the couch and the wall. The open end I am currently building a small magazine sized shelving unit to go ftom the table top to the floor.

I have it sitting in the kitchen because the Poly was still a little tacky. I followed the rule measure 9 times cut once ;) I think I'll be fine

My mom lives down south in a trailer, it's quite nice, 2 bedroom 2 bath, with a hot tub. I was impressed when I went to visit.

I'm thinking of making a coffee table, anyone know what a good wood to use to make a nice smooth surfaced table., I'm digging this style.

any hard-wood would work.
maple, ash, cherry, ceader, oak, etc... are all nice.
you may need to borrow a planer and belt sander to get the surface as flat and smooth as you want.
but most of the smoothness on tables comes from the thick finish.

For coffee tables, only solid oak will do.

Mahogany is nice too, but pricey.

Yeah, after he drove a 350z and spent like $10k on his wifes ring he went out and got a mobile home..

Oh and they do make some nice ones now. Obviously they aren't going to show up on cribs but I see nothing wrong with owning a nice mobile home on a private lot. Better than having a shit apartment.

true, but mobile homes in NJ would be pretty trashy, where down south, it's common. I havn't gotten off my ass and bought a house yet... Mostly because I love the place I'm at now. and would like to buy the house from my landlord. Hopefully next year I get off my arse and start lookin.

I wish I could buy the house I'm living in now from the landlord. I'd never be able to afford it by myself though.
