Now, "Matthew Kane" -- forcing a specific role on the player. That is pretty dang anti-Quake. That's in essence the same as giving the DOOM character a name. It's supposed to be "you." And that's part of the coolness of it.
Example: TIE Fighter was a great game. But part of the coolness of it was that you were the TIE pilot rising through the ranks. It was you in the cockpit. It wasn't some genericly-named ("Kane"?!? seriously, what the fuck! That name was cool in Kung-Fu and Robocop 2 when I was 9, not Quake) guy out there. And the same has always applied to id's games, at least since DOOM.
Contrary to adding immersion to the game, handing such a specific role to the player kills it off. Another example. You're playing HL2, and you're pretty into it, then you walk into like, the tenth room where somebody's like, "OOOOOH! Gordan Freeman! Wow, you're a legend, can I suck you off!?!" That kind of garbage totally takes you out of the experience and reminds you that you're not the hero in the story -- you're some nerd-creation of a development team that you don't care for at all, let alone want to become.
I'm 100% opposed to naming the character in a Quake series game.
exactly what i was thinking.
it works for some games if the story is quite good, but for FPS's (especially id style fps's), i want to be "me", not "John Smith"

Bah I don't really care if the marine has a name cause we all know we won't be playing as Matthew Kane in multiplayer so...
The q2 intro was amazing...but I think the marine had a name...I may be wrong.
It was written "Bitterman" on his little space jet thing...when it crashes you can see it.
I particularly like the hand-crafted aspect of the thin red line--you're telling the audience that quake 4 is a labor of love as soon as they see the box

omfg the thin red line was indeed my idea...it looks even better now on my hi-res version...my logo's the complete package.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten that. True.
That first level of Quake2 was a classic. Pity the rest of the game totally fails to match up to it. "Marine! The plot's completely disappeared! Your mission is to do some stuff for no apparent reason!"

Quake 2's intro was fucking awesome, I used to love watching that. Bitterman should have been the same character in Q4, I don't know why they're switching condoms mid-erection when there's smashing to do.
Kane or Caine has to be the most worn-out fucking name in american popular culture. Every other movie- game- or book character is called Caine - especially if they're a little dark, anti-hero types.
I just hope it plays well. I cant see vehicles working in the doom engine, i never really liked them much in the doom 3 SDK. And after playing massive open areas, you just have to stop and think just how "big" can they make Quake 4

installed q2 on my mate's new old machine at the weekend (along with a lot of other stuff) - hadn't seen the q2 intro for years, had forgotten how fucking brilliant it was. there's a bit where the camera swoops around a structure as the music changes, stuck in my head for some reason.
one tiny important thing with q4 is making sure the sp ending fmv isn't shit, that stupid little clip of a fist at the end of q2 was crap.
honestly I don't know why they keep using those old shots... hopefully there will be some new press soon (but they don't really keep us in the loop as far as that kind of thing goes) and you guys can see what's up
With E3 coming pretty soon and then QuakeCon soon after that, I doubt we'll be in any kind of shortage of Quake 4 media for a long time. Starting soon, that is.
This line only remake is total rubbish I've ever seen!!! Fuck off!!! --CZghost
