Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Here's the same image with some adjustments to give it a more washed out, vintage look.

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
it's a nice technique for 'concept' shots (like your cathedraltnf wrote:Not doing much HDR lately, but had a chance to go through this cathedral by myself this morning (maintenance let me in after seeing me outside doing sunrise shots). Been wanting to try an HDR of a place like this for awhile. Regarding HDR, I know many think HDR is a fad, and there is definitely a fad aspect to it, but it does have some really practical benefits and you can generate some very natural looking scenes that are simply exposed more evenly than you could otherwise.

eventually someone will figure out a way of simulating in still images what the eye does when tracking across a scene (adjusting the pupil/aperture on the fly), though probably somewhere at the sensor level rather than the aperture

Here's another shot showing more of the entire hall:

Looks sort of like something from a video game.

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Yeah, it'd be fun to go in there with a pulse rifle. Tear that shit up...
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Pulse rifle? Are you some kind of UT noob? For shame!
Amazing shots tnf! Can I get that cathedral in 1920x1200 (or around that size)?

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
tbf, the first thing that came to mind was indeed the unreal engine.
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
xer0brains is thinking of the shock rifle
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
same here i definately thought it came straight out of some game. Can't really dig that specific picture tnf. I have little to no knowledge about post processing and whatnot you all talk about, but for me it might be a bit overkill.MKJ wrote:tbf, the first thing that came to mind was indeed the unreal engine.
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Zyte - those images are done with a process called HDR, where you take an overexposed, underexposed, and normally exposed image and use software to blend them. Following that, I use photoshop to dodge/burn/edit the thing.
I wouldn't expect those images to be viewed or critiqued as a photograph by the time they are in this state, and it's a matter of personal preference for sure - you'll find some who like the look and others who don't.

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
This style of image is popping up all over the internet and every time I see it I can't help but think, game engine image. Every picture looks like it's from a video game. Though they do look cool. They don't look real. Personally, I'd rather see a crisp clean image of that church. However, this does bring to question the future on HDTV. Would a company ever manufacture a TV that had this feature? It might be cool to watch your favorite show as a video game.
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
to have what feature??
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
I see, tnf. Do you also have the original (or another 'normal' photograph of this cathedral)? I'd like to see it, and compare with this HDR picture.
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
if it works the way tnf says then no, the cameras shooting the show would have to do it in the right way, it'd get HDR'd in production and the tv would just deal with what it was given.YourGrandpa wrote:Would a company ever manufacture a TV that had this feature?
maybe a faux-hdr will crop up in a cheesy videocard menu (alongside sepia and mosaic) as PCs and TVs merge.
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Here's one of the non-hdr'd versions with a curves adjustment. Sometimes I do HDR's that aren't supposed to look 'fake' - other times I am going for the processed look. This place is a local landmark, so I figured I'd try to do something different with it since there have been roughly 1 billion regular photographs of the place.
So this is one of the images that went into the HDR.

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Yea, it would have to be shot simultaneously overexposed, underexposed, and correctly exposed, then have all that merged. I'm no expert in the technology, so I don't know how they would really pull off real-time HDR'ing of a movie like that.4days wrote:if it works the way tnf says then no, the cameras shooting the show would have to do it in the right way, it'd get HDR'd in production and the tv would just deal with what it was given.YourGrandpa wrote:Would a company ever manufacture a TV that had this feature?

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
Well I'm not sure how you're making the pictures look the way they do. But if you're simply overlaying the same image multiple times with different exposures and then doing some minor processing, it should be possible to make it a selectable feature on a TV.
BTW, I like the "crisp clear" photo. It's teetering right on that real/fake line.

Re: PHOTOS PLEASE
also, surely you'd need all three apertures in the same physical location to get a perfect match? the alternative would be three very close together, and an image made by cropping the area of the scene where they overlap, though this would really only work for distant objectstnf wrote:Yea, it would have to be shot simultaneously overexposed, underexposed, and correctly exposed, then have all that merged. That is exactly what I was thinking!!!!! they look great though, i must say
Re: PHOTOS PLEASE

No processing, no desire to really do it
