:q3: I use gtk radiant trying to learn to map for quake 3 arena. . .should I be using something different?
ok. . .I need to know how to setup the default shaderlist thingy. . .does it even do anything?

cuz in all the normal pak0 textures/shaders it has a white box around the shaders and the textures are there and all that, but any other map the texture browser is drawing from it doesn't do like that. . .I need step by step instructions on what to do. . .

same and when i install gtk some textures in game disappear altogether from some maps. . .don't know why. . .I've reinstalled everything clean a billion times but it still does it. . .

I really need help with using q3ase too. . .I have photoshop cs3 and all that so I could do just about anything on this dual core. . .I really wanna learn how to do all this stuff and how everything functions (I understand the concepts but execution is a problem for me)

then after I get that down I'm gonna learn how to model and then. . AND THEN I'm moving on to bump mapping.


someone please help me. . .oh yeah. . I'm running quake 3 1.16 . . .is there anywhere I can get a lightening gun replacement, not for the gun itself, but for the bolt that comes out? . . .that damn thing drains my fps bad. . .

GtkRadiant is the popular editor of choice. Most of us use version 1.4.0 or 1.5.0. You may find ZeroRadiant on the development page, but it's kind of wonky at the moment.

In addition to GtkRadiant, you may need to download the gamepacks for Quake 3. This is the extra shaders and other development files you'll need to start off with (also on the qeradiant page). I think the basic shaderlist.txt is included with the game packs, so perhaps this is what you're missing. If you have any extra custom shaders, you'll have to add those to the list for them to show up in the editor.

What do you mean "any other map", and textures in game disappearing "from some maps"? Stock Q3 maps? Custom maps? Your maps? If you're talking about custom shaders, just add the name of the shaders to the shaderlist.txt.

Q3 1.3.0 has the new updated lightning effect.

ok. . .sorry for being so . . .run together with what I type. . .

ok ok ok i need.. . . .lots of help then. . .really. . .I'm really trying to learn. . .for the most part I can figure some stuff out but . . .wow. . .lots of stuff to learn here. . .

ok. . .what I was talking about textures missing IN-GAME as far as I can tell. . .it's in q3dm11. . .don't know why. . .some textures just go missing. ..leaving that black and white grid. . .I've tried and tried to fix it but it always comes back. . .don't know what to do about it, it's just a minor annoyance. . .

but like. . .ok (I'll post some pictures later) but in my texture browser in gtkradiant. . .like anything from pak0 shows up right. . little white box around shaders, little green box around textures I'm currently using. . .all that. . .

but. . .any other .pk3 that I have in my baseq3. . .gtkradiant draws/reads textures from it. . .but there aren't any with little white boxes around them. . .to show me that they're shaders. . .with special properties (am I understanding what I'm talking about at all?)

for example. . . I have the bgmap pack (burial grounds map pack)

I go into the pk3 file. . .there's a folder called textures, inside that folder is 2 folders "bgmaps" and "bgjumps"

there are .tga files and .jpeg files in it. . .do I add the 2 folders bgmaps and bgjumps to my shaderlist or do I go through and manually add every tga file to it?
oh yeah and I do have that example map pack . . .I almost pulled my hair out for a few days one time trying to figure out why I couldn't make water. . .

.tga and .jpg files are just image files, they don't have any special properties attached to them. What makes shaders special (those textures with white borders) is that they have a shader script written for them that defines extra properties like whether players can walk through them, sounds they make when you walk on them, whether they have transparent parts, special animated twirly bits, etc.

Shader scripts can be found in the scripts folder. Some of the basic ones are base_floor.shader or gothic_block.shader or liquids.shader. There are a few special editor ones like common.shader. If you open up your shaderlist.txt file, you'll notice all of these are listed. The shaderlist.txt is how you let GtkRadiant know which shaders you want loaded up and which ones you would rather ignore.

So if you have an extra custom set of textures/shaders you would like to use with GtkRadiant, you have to find the name of the shader file (perhaps something like bgmap.shader, open up your custom .pk3 file with 7-zip/Winzip or something to find out) and add that name to your shaderlist.txt.

Obsidian gave you great feedback, so I won't bother adding to that (partly because I'm lazy today...okay, in general), but the part above worries me, and probably means that your Q3 install is broken somehow.

A good way to test this is to do a separate CLEAN install of Q3 in another directory--no mods or anything, just official patches. I can almost guarantee you that it will work correctly, and then you can compare the two installs and (hopefully) figure out what's causing your problem.

thank you guys so much. . .you're really helping me. . .I know I'm not special and don't deserve to have this one on one help. .. . or one on two. . or whatever. . .

with as many missing images as this forum has it would appear I'm pilfering through cobwebs in an abandoned house but it's like I found a secret trap door and all you guys are in a secret room hanging out . . .thank you. . .

I'll keep on doing what I'm doing and trying and trying and I'll never give up. . .

I hope you'll kinda. . .sorta. . .if I have a question or something . . .answer. . . .don't leave me hangin. . .I do try to search the forum first to see if I can figure it out myself but sometimes I just can't find the answers to my questions. . .

anyway I'm working on redoing facility from goldeneye. . and I know I'm stealing and I know I'm using other people's hard earned work/shaders/textures and all that but . . . .well. . .I have a job and I'm doing the best I can and I really wanna get pretty darn good at this stuff. . .guess I just lack imagination. . .

I'll keep on keeping on and if I have any questions I'll just ask. . .


what I really need now is somewhere to download lots and lots of .md3's. . .

OMFG i'm such a noob. . .ok ok ok check it. . .started messing around with q3ase. . .I'm running vista or maybe it's just the prog but. . .some stuff is missing but for the most part every shader shows up. . .

I like. . .accidentally made some really thin white fog. . .and that really led me into understanding the structure. . .

I am STUDYINGNOW BUDDY. . .

Im not so much trying to make anything as I am studying. . .the animation stuff looks easy enough. . .actually it's all starting to look pretty easy now. . .wish me luck. . .pray I don't go to jail for nonpayment of fines. . .and. . .most importantly. . .
