The actual item I'm looking at comes with a 9" hayes front brake, XT components througout, full 8" front and rear travel.
Stock parts you see there are Specialized hubs, marchozzi bomber forks.
The thing that's worrying me about this purchase, apart from the price, is the rear wheel. It's kids-bike sized, and I'm worried I might not be able to find many tyres for that.

I'm planning on using it for freeride with some downhill duties when I go off camping in the peaks in a few weeks.
I never went uphill, I let someone ride my epic down and I took his bighit. Maybe I was used to mine, but it felt pretty clunky, I'd fucking hate to try and get up a steep hill on it, or carry it over a fence. It flew down the hill though, soaked up everything.
It's nice. back in the late 90's this style was pretty popular with trek, I dunno how the ride is though. I was always weary of purchasing it though cause it looks like a lot of pressure is applied to the rear shock and unless it's well built would seem prone to breaking off high jumps or any type of hard riding.
Also I heard those bikes tend to have a very loose rear which sucks going up hills or doing any kind of sprinting as the wheel has the tendency to move left to right as you're pedaling kinda like carbon fiber bikes. It's make a nice casual rider though if you're not into racing and prefer the feel of a dual suspension bike it seems like it'd be good for that.
It's SERIOUSLY heavy. You're right about uphills, I'm walking.
On the down rides, it's fucking fast and tracks nicely. The spakky back wheel didn't impact in any negative way, the whole thing is a blast...
A little difficult to turn into sharp corners, to be expected really. The rear suspension is all new to me, so that's going to take a bit of getting used to.
Big grin though, now I need to find some fast open downhill trails to get back into practice.

once you get the hang of it a dual suspension bike going downhill corners much better than a hardtail. At least it should.
