Selling stuff based on other people's concepts.
I've taken some time off paid work to expand my portfolio and attempt to break into work that I actually want to do by doing what will probably be a series of character sculpts from l4d. Now, if they turn out any good, what's the deal if I wanted to cast a couple out and sell them (seeing as I've got no income at the moment, it would be good to attempt to get some capital for my efforts). Would it be sensible to talk to valve? or just flog them on ebay hoping they wouldn't notice? would valve even care? If I were a corporation, I'd see it more as a compliment than someone trying to leech off my product, but this is probably the reason I'll never own or even work in a ruthless business environment.
I've seen on ebay people selling their own (very poor) buffy the vampire slayer models, not to mention lots of other poplular media stuff, is this techinically illegal too? - if it's something based on a sculpt of an actual person, rather than that of an artistic concept such as a Boomer? does selling a Sarah Michelle Gellar bust differ from selling a Buffy bust?

once he's finished, I'll probably do a Bill, or maybe a Zoey.

He's commissioned to do his stuff, though. If I decide to sells these I'd be doing it as an individual.

Don't talk to Valve if you don't want to hear 'no'.

Just don't mention Left 4 Dead and/or Boomer when you sell it and you'll be fine. Call it a Bloomer or a Boozer or something.

If you want some real answers, save up a couple hundred dollars and talk to a lawyer...
