you can mount an ntfs drive in linux. get knoppix (runs from cd, no installation) and copy the stuff to another drive.

need to acces the folder?

go into a folder tools, folder options view uncheck "use simple file sharing" (bottom of the list)

save.

then right click the dir you want to access. go to properties. go to the security tab. click add. type "everyone" (without quotes) into the empty section. click check names. then ok.

now on this page highlight the everyone account. click the "full control" check box.

click the advanced button at the bottom. check the bottom check box. says "replce permission entries on...."

then apply. might take a bit. then try and access the dir

Also, you can put that hard drive in a machine running windows XP Pro and navigate across to the folder there. Using an administrator account on that PC, you can 'take ownership' of the folders and browse them.

I installed SP2 and it FUCKING CUNTED MY FUCKING PC

I run the repair from the Windows disc
Load and get a FUCKING BSOD

I've found a drive with a backup XP on,
and I can access the fucked drive, but as I had a password on my account I can't access the My Documents folder

This folder has every photo i've taken over the past 3 years, all my mp3's, along with christ knows what else irreplacable personal shit.

I simply NEED to access this folder. Is there any way in the bowels of hades that I can hack my way into this folder?

I know this is in GD, because i really need some real fucking help with this one.

You need to take ownership of the old 'My Documents' folder.

Right click the folder > Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner

Select your current user from the list of users in the dialog box. They click 'apply'. Can take a few minutes to overwrite the security, but afterwords you'll have full access again.

We're planning on rolling out SP2 to our 200 or so machines before the end of second quarter, so I hope it works just fine without re-imaging :O

Anyway, we're doing it via SUS... if that was genuinely going wrong for people I'm sure we'd hear a lot more about it before now.
