you can mount an ntfs drive in linux. get knoppix (runs from cd, no installation) and copy the stuff to another drive.

need to acces the folder?

go into a folder -> tools, folder options -> view -> uncheck "use simple file sharing" (bottom of the list)

save.

then right click the dir you want to access. go to properties. go to the security tab. click add. type "everyone" (without quotes) into the empty section. click check names. then ok.

now on this page highlight the everyone account. click the "full control" check box.

click the advanced button at the bottom. check the bottom check box. says "replce permission entries on...."

then apply. might take a bit. then try and access the dir :)

When you get to the repair console on the Windows XP disc, you will mysteriously find you have unrestricted access to the entire NTFS volume, and can copy the files across to another device.

Also, you can put that hard drive in a machine running windows XP Pro and navigate across to the folder there. Using an administrator account on that PC, you can 'take ownership' of the folders and browse them.

IM ON THE FUCKING EDGE HERE

I honestly cannot beleive how fucking ridiculous my fucking luck is

I've found a drive with a backup XP on,
and I can access the fucked drive, but as I had a password on my account I can't access the My Documents folder

This folder has every photo i've taken over the past 3 years, all my mp3's, along with christ knows what else irreplacable personal shit.

I simply NEED to access this folder. Is there any way in the bowels of hades that I can hack my way into this folder?

I know this is in GD, because i really need some real fucking help with this one.

Cheers fellas. Hopefully i can get this sorted, else i'll be pouring myself a nice pint of bleach.
You need to take ownership of the old 'My Documents' folder.

Right click the folder > Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner

Select your current user from the list of users in the dialog box. They click 'apply'. Can take a few minutes to overwrite the security, but afterwords you'll have full access again.

Only if he's on Pro. that can't be done on home to my knowledge.

I believe it's NTFS dependant, not on the OS but you could be right.

Of interest from that link:

"Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials.<b> If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.</b>"

Hope that helps Memphy. :P It's a common problem, relax, we'll get you through it without any data loss. :)

WP for not noticing the bit about using safe mode, and the recovery console.

Both of which probably work just fine.

We're planning on rolling out SP2 to our 200 or so machines before the end of second quarter, so I hope it works just fine without re-imaging :O

Anyway, we're doing it via SUS... if that was genuinely going wrong for people I'm sure we'd hear a lot more about it before now.

I've done upgrades straight from Windows update at least half a dozen times this year. I've never had any problems
