Yes. On the final days and with the Viet cong making a big push to the ports many Captains ordered any heavy equipment such as tanks, choppers and canons etc to be pushed from the decks into the sea in order to make the ships faster as the Viet cong were taking pot shots at the fleeing crew on the decks from the shore line.

You can now do dives around the rusting dreams of the USM as part of a holiday package.
