The Dreamcast dc_ss401-409 in game maps

Post by v1l3 »

..back in 1999 to the beginning of 2000 I started playing Q3 on the Sega Dreamcast. The normal dc maps are dc_map01-24 which are the maps which are the same maps as the pc maps minus dc_map06, dc_map08, dc_map17 which became mptourney1,3,4, and dc_map24 which became mpteam2. The only maps which are all by themselves were dc_map07, and dc_map15, dc_map23(ctf)...these maps were unplayable until the dc_mappack came out over at ..::LvL.

The maps dc_ss401-409 are the maps which were made for multiplayer for 2-4 players offline on a Dreamcast which kept the pc players out of the server. They weren't pretty maps...but, they were more aimed at 1v1 gameplay. Some of them are very fun maps to play.

There was a mapper that remade these maps so that pc players could play against DC players online. I've never seen these maps put up for download anywhere..which always made me wonder if they are illegal maps..considering that it would allow a pc player to play the whole Dreamcast version of Q3.

I was in a clan when on the DC, which helped me online to work my way over to the PC version(Quake3 Gold) on pr1.30. My clan leader sent me a disc which was called the xdc_ss.pk3, which held all of the dc_maps and the dc_ss401-409 maps. The skies on the ss maps were never finished which when you look at them they create a hall of mirrors effect.

My question is this..who was the original mapper that made these maps on the Dreamcast, and who was the mapper that remade them? I would like to send them into ..::LvL for people to play on them and make the credit goes in the right place, but other question is are they legal? Does anyone other than me have these maps in this mappack, or am I the only one who has this mappack? I can't remember the name of the clan I was in that I got it from. So....hmm

The actual maps were made available for download. A few of them are REALLY cool, one of which (i forget the name) is one of the best Q3 maps you can get.

File Planet may have them..?

dc_ss401 - Revolver
dc_ss402 - Frenzy
dc_ss403 - Incinerator
dc_ss404 - Brute Force
dc_ss405 - Agony
dc_ss406 - Crisis
dc_ss407 - Incinerator(CTF)
dc_ss408 - Slow Burn(CTF)
dc_ss409 - Revolver(CTF)

I personally like Frenzy, Agony, and Crisis.

Search for dcmappack.zip and you'll find it, don't bother with Fileshack you have to register to download from there.
Here's the link which I found and got a good speed from (depends on your location of course, I am in the UK): http://games.mirrors.tds.net/pub/planet ... appack.zip

Edit: That was with DAP which did a mirror search, though, so it could have been fast cause it was split between mirrors, I don't know if it was.

yeah..I found one over at Filefront..same pk3 name as mine, but more errors than mine has. It was supposedly made by a mapper named stonedonkey(Donk) and he submitted the file to Filefront like 3 months back oddly. I've had mine since like 2000/2001(can't remember)and he submitted it 3 months back...I dunno, strange to me...anyways, this is what his readme says:
____________________________________________________________________
v1.0 - Basically took all the textures of the DC disk and converted them to
PC format. The sounds from dc_map06 were .wavs I had to replace since
I couldn't find a convertor, it seems pretty close.

Problems - the maps dc_ss401 - dc_ss409 are not rendering the sky properly,
I've viewed the files with a hex editor and it appears that a
texture called solid_noimpact.tga is missing, it's not on the
DC disk and not included with Quake3 typically (least that I saw)
the sky for these maps should be black, but I can't seem to figure
out what's missing. I'll keep working on it.

Please email me if you figure out the deal with the sky so I can fix it

I haven't written to him yet so, I eventually get around to that
