I'm ok with that so long as it's not intrusive and doesn't detract in any way from the gameplay.

word. i dont see why people are getting so worked up about this. advertisement in games has been around for years. but, more often than not they are fake advertisements. what does it matter if the texture on the billboard says "coca cola" instead of "new alien coke!!1".

also. wipeout2097/XL had Red Bull, Prodigy and Fluke advertisements.
not to mention the commercials for the (fake) racing brands

Every damn racing game for the last 20 years has had ads.

The main thing here is that the ads will "update" when you play the game - i.e. you'll download new ad content once in a while. Plus it will probably send back marketing data on how many "views" the ads have had and so on.

The game companies never got paid for advertising. Now they will.

Ah yes, more money for the game companies must mean a significant drop in prices.

Right?

Syndicate Wars used to have the Ghost in the Shell trailer on the billboards.

If they're placed to look like they normally would in real life (on billboards, storefronts, etc), then I wouldn't have a problem with them.

But if they start acting like pop-ups, or somehow make the game environment less immersive then the games will suck for it.
I don't really care if they make an extra buck off advertising as long as it doesn't ruin the game.

You guys don't feel you are exposed to enough propaganda aready?

Personally I get ill looking around seeing billboards and signs as far as the eye can see. I don't watch TV or listen to the radio anymore because of the insane amounts of mentally poisonous propaganda they spew. It's disgusting. 'Selling' is disgusting and dispicable.

Being informative for your customers... that's another story.

But it's realistic. How realistic would a racecar look in a Daytona 500 game without ads plastered all over it's side? The fact they're real ads just ads that much more to the realism of the game. Billboards in city's are the same. There's nothing wrong with em until they reach the point where it stops the game to show you and ad. THAT will be a game I'll refuse to buy.

I mostly agree with you, but there's nothing illegal about it. I just ignore most of the ads I see, whether they're billboards, tv, radio or whatever. It was inevitable that they'd make it into video games too, just a matter of time. Let 'em spend all the money they want on ads, I'm not buying anything based on them.

I'm not sure where the legality comes into it, as this is personal objection for me.

The reason I'm so against advertising completely surrounding us, is becuase it eventually begins to become and define our reality to those that can't filter it out. These poor souls already believe they need to wear nikes, drink coke, and wear hip huggers to be socially acceptable. A simple glance at our society will elude to the deep and disturbing manipulation of the general public.

For the first time in history we have entire industries dedicated to not essential goods and services that are larger than those that are. This doens't mean much accept that it does show that society has been convinced that in order to maintain the status quo, we must obtain these objects to fit it. AT ALL COSTS.

Put along side the horrify rate on increase in consumer debt and it shows how truely powerful and manipulative marketing is.

On a side note, talk to any psychology major or professor and they'll rant for hours at how every single thing about a piece of advertising is a subtle and direct manipulation of a persons thoughts. They dont' choose colors, lines, patterns, etc. for random reasons. All of those tiny, minute details all have been heavily, heavily scrutinized in order to maximize how to achieve the most powerful response in the victim. Err... customer.

By FAR the best example of the future of marketing was the episode of Futurama where Fry discovers they beam adverts directly into your dreams while you sleep.

Providedthere aren't going to be adverts between levels like "This game is sponsored by [so-and-so], for all of your armadillo needs!", or banner ads sitting on the top corner of the screen, then I'm not too bothered.

I don't mind a bit of added realism from proper billboards in an urban environment or something like that, that's fine. Anything that impedes gameplay isn't going to fly.
