when i was working at a local guitar shop during the summers, i would pray to vai that the next fucker picking up a guitar wouldn't play the intro to crazy train.

it's even more el oh el on some of the songs being posted unless I'm the only one thinking raw gets raw fingers after a few minutes of string play.
I already have my callouses built up on my fingers. The only part I get sore on now is my wrist on my fret hand (my left).

It's actually still the only song I can remember flawlessly to play. I've simply forgotten how to play so many songs but that one will always have my fingers on auto-pilot. I can even play it on a left-handed guitar strung upside down so I guess it's also the easiest song for me to play.

Careful with this. Your wrist shouldn't hurt. Maybe some minor, fleeting discomfort if you hit a weird, stretchy chord, but it should never really hurt or ache. You have bad technique if it does. If you keep it up you could develop a ganglion cyst among other things.

Try playing classic style (guitar on left knee for right handed people) and see how you like it.

I once covered a class for the guitar teacher's class - I mention thunderstruck because there were about 5 guys in the class trying to play the intro to that and for one hour all I heard was them successfully get through the first 10 seconds or so before fucking up...and starting again, and again, and again, and again, and again....

I honestely have no idea what the first song was that I learned. Probably some Metallica song. Since that's all that I can play.

Thanks for the tip! I usually play with my guitar on my left leg (as suggested). I try to play standing more since that is more of a challenge. It's not like I'm in pain or anything it's just sore from use since my left hand is usually useless. It feels like my wrists and hands did when I first started computers and wasn't used to typing all day.

Fair enough. Just something to watch out for, is all. Also, when you play standing up, don't fall into the trap of playing your guitar so low that you can't even do anything just to look cool or something. If all you're doing is chunkin' out then maybe, yeah, but seriously... if its hurting you or you can't play the music properly, that is gunna be 100x more obvious that how high your guitar is.

I wasn't sure what the proper way was to hold it standing so I've tried it every position until I could comfortably play.

Well there's really only one way to hold your guitar when you're standing, I'm just talking about adjusting the length of the strap so the height of the guitar is comfortable. Don't make it too long or else you're gonna have to wrench your wrist right around to get access to the fretboard and that's a good way to destroy your wrist.

Another thing to balance out with height is for your picking hand; I find that playing standing up allows me to pick faster (down-picking) because my elbow is not all wrenched up like it is when I'm sitting down. If it's too low you might have difficulty muting the strings during soloing or palm-muted rhythm parts, if its too high you're just gonna run into the cramped elbow shit again.

You'll figure it out, just keep playin :olo:
