Hitchiker's Guide review

Post by l0g1c »

Taken from /. so some may have seen this already.

The guy gives it a horrible review, and he's been close to Adams for about 20 years. I'll still see it, but out of morbid curiosity rather than giddy anticipation.

Why do people write "CAUTION: SPOILERS" all over the place when talking about a movie and book that have been around for ages?

That's like talking about the LOTR series and saying "SPOILER ALERT".

All sorted. Thanks for showing me the err of my ways. I thought twice about it, but I suppose I should've made it thrice. Wrawr. Those responsible have been sacked.

Douglas Adams was a dialogue writer. That was his skill - writing great dialogue. And when he had written it, he would rewrite it again and again and again, changing a word here or there because he knew that good comedy writing is like poetry. It has a meter to it and when you get the right words in the right order it just sounds right and nothing else will do. Douglas’ dialogue was perfect. However, the makers of this film, despite all their talk of being faithful to Douglas’ intentions and ideals, have seen fit to piss about with his carefully crafted, wonderfully quotable lines.

There were plenty of reviews weeks ago on Aintitcool, that all said it was good.

I personally am really hyped for this movie. I'm just about done book two.

Zaphod, Trillian and Zarniwhoop just talked to the 'old man in the shack'. I fucking LOVE Douglas Adams after reading that scene.

It's science fiction mixed with British humor and a lot of brilliant word play. There's a plot, but the plot really isn't the point.

Ugh, that wasn't too good. They've been playing the TV series on a local PBS station, I've watched every episode twice a week and we're on the third repeat of the whole six episodes, so I'm gonna have fixed ideas about what it should be. I'll see it anyway, though. Looks like I better go see it the first week in case it flops and disappears in one week. Cause if the diehard fans don't like it and don't go see it 10 times, people who know nothing about it probably aren't going to bother with it, especially if it gets bad reviews.

But wait, something will probably have been nagging at the back of your mind for a while now. You are no doubt wondering why - I mean, why the bloody hell - is Zaphod going to Deep Thought to find out the Question? Isn't the whole point that Deep Thought was only powerful enough to calculate the Answer and had to design a bigger computer to work out the Question? Isn't that the very bedrock of the whole damn fucking storyline, for fuck's sake?!
:icon19:

This movie is going to piss so many people off. It's okay. The other time they tried to make it a movie it sucked too.

aye. that was an earlier cut though, and the reviewers weren't so familiar with the source material - maybe they've managed to fuck things up since then.

about halfway through the review, and i'm starting to think maybe this guy didn't like it at all..

WTF? The plot is Zaphod finding Deep Thought to ask him the meaning?! :(

After reading almost half of that review, I am already terribly disappointed in this movie.

Once again I am right.
I predicted Doom3 would suck. I was right.
I predicted this would suck. It seems I am right.
