Such progress has been painfully slow, alas. Despite kneejerk tendencies to think otherwise, general US gov. R&D funding remains relatively healthy, but there are dozens of small projects with theoretical and near-applicable import that could be on-going with the proper support. The indeterminate benefits of these endeavors at the margins of understanding make a difficult case for the commitment of funds, but in aggregate many small gambles here can lead to large sum pay-offs over the long run. IOW, society can expect tangible rewards from such commitments.
Having said that, I would probably top things off by pouring inordinate dollars into the development of robust machine intelligence.
But I digress....
