the 1 series is a failure because it was supposed to be an entry level car aimed at younger buyers, but instead they decided to churn out a more cramped 3-series at the same price point. aka, a failure.

oh, and if you're going for a speedy 4-door the evo apparently kills the 135i for significantly less money and still providing more car.
and i highly doubt it beats a Cayman S around anything.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it. The fact that the 1 series is smaller and lighter than the 3 series but with the same engine is precisely the reason I like it. It's more pure and even more of a driver's car than the 3 series. Granted the price is a bit steep, but it's still cheaper than a comparable 3 series. The only thing I don't like about it is the so-called electronic LSD, which uses the rear brakes to achieve the LSD effect.

The Evo is actually priced about the same as the 135i, depending on which model you get, and the options you select. It may be a lot quicker around the track than the 135i (or maybe those guys just don't know how to push a powerful RWD car), but some of the MT editors (like this one) still prefer the 135i over the Evo since it's more refined. I personally would not want the Evo simply because I’m not really a fan of AWD.

Not sure how much quicker the Cayman S is over the regular Cayman, but the 135i was nearly 2 seconds quicker than the regular Cayman around the track in this Fifth Gear shootout (Tiff is probably getting too old for this now...). It also beat out the Cayman in the slalom comp and only loosed out in the irrelevant drift comp, which IMO, the 135i should have won as well.

that's an interesting comp. between the two cars. peronally if i were to go bmw i'd pick the 335 but overall i'd take the evo simply for the AWD. of course that's more of a preference towards my driving style. RWD is neat and i'd take it any day over FWD but i find that i'm too agressive to properly harness power in a RWD car. for whatever reason the AWD just clicks with me. I went up against a modded STi in my at the time stock WRX on a track and he swore that i had modded suspension and power because he brake fadded and couldn't keep up with me :dork:

foo: that's a sweet ass car. those things are incredibly rare around here; i've only seen one in my entire life and i nearly drooled on the thing. sweet ride

Most certainly. On it's own I think the 135 is a decent car. But the 1-series fails to deliver on what it was supposed to be. It should have been in the same price point as a WRX, Mustang, etc... Probably also would have been better with a 4cyl and under 3000 lbs. So given it's place in the market and what they were trying to do... the 1-series as a car is a failure.

exactly. the 1 series would have been great if it was priced accordingly.

Remember the 1 series is new to the US market, and they decided to offer only the high-end models here (135i and 128i). There are other cheaper, less powerful 1 series being sold in other parts of the world for years. Perhaps they should've brought them over as well, but I’m not at all interested in those lesser 1 series models. I want a smaller, proper Bimmer without the bloat, and the 135i seems to fit the bill at a price point I’m still willing to pay.

And yes, I wish they made the 1 series much lighter too, and I’m sure they could. The problem is that the 135i already outperforms the 3 series, so they cannot make it any lighter such that it vastly outperforms the 3 series or is comparable to the M3.

I'm just disappointed that the 135i is $6,300 more than the 128i (it should've been priced in the low 30's), but nonetheless it’s still priced to compete with cars of similar specs and performance. The base MSRP of the WRX STI is about $35,000, which is the same as the 135i. The Evo MR actually costs $3,000 more at around $38,000, and those cars probably don't have the same refinement or quality that you’ll find in the Bimmer.

Well, not surprisingly, many people have likened the 135i to be a smaller version of the M3 (I believe they call it the 135i M Sport in Europe). Bigger and heavier seem to be the trend in the past decade or so, and sadly, that trend has hit the current M3 as well, even if it’s still a very quick and amazing car…

Thanks stu. They're pretty rare here too and most of them are hidden away in garages.

I'm starting to figure out driving it a bit better now. Holding onto gears way longer than seems natural and not flooring it coming off sharp, badly surfaced roundabouts

Saw that car go for $1 million at the Barrett-Jackson auction last night. Btw, the paint is $60,000/gallon.

That is just the coating for the exposed carbon fiber.

It's amazing how much time was knocked off from the car simply by changing the way they run to lap to the apparent 'new industry standard' which nissan has been doing since the r33gtr. I'd be curious to know exactly what all changed, were the start/end points are ect. Be interesting to see the z06 run the same way.(in fact I'd like to see the gt3/gt2/porsche turbo and carrera gt get re-run this way.. I highly suspect they weren't if they didn't absolutely blitz the z06's known ring time.(keep in mind, porsche uses r-compound mich. cup tires for these runs, which arent even available for the porsche turbo and cGT).
But yeah that car is quick. quite amazing for a car that is designed to be even more GT and civil for street use while also riding on tires with a 220 wear rate. Can't wait to see how many of the bits and pieces trickle down to the c7 corvettes.

Still a bunch of girl cars compared to the viper ACR though >:)

I just heard Jay Leno mention it and all he said was paint. Nice freakin' car, at any rate. The douche that bought it had just purchase a '53 Vette, serial #3 for a million bucks. The bid (his own) on the ZR1 was $900,000, so what does this asshat do? Raises his own fucking bid to $1 million just so he can say he paid that much for it. How do people this stupid get that much money in the first place?

Well no offense to Mr. Jay MASSIVE-HEAD Leno but here is some more specific info on it:
It took years to develop the clearcoat for the carbon-fiber because sunlight degrades the material over time. The coating, which only the ZR1 has, uses a special additive to prevent that. The additive alone costs $60,000 a gallon, while the mixture of clearcoat and additive applied to the roof costs $2,200 a gallon.

As far as the guy though, yeah thats insanely over the top financial dig swinging but then again didn't the proceeds go to some charity? If that is the case then I say let him have at it. Personally, I wouldn't want to be the one remembered for paying 1 million dollars for a chevy. :owned:

Ah, well, thanks for the clarification on the paint bit.
I believe that the Barrett-Jackson sales are just regular old auctions, not for charities. Either way, that guy's a colossal shitwad.

Not sure what I think of this. I was sure I was going to weep when I first saw it as a thumbnail. It's still a bit of a bastardization, but I'm not entirely sure it's as bad as I expected.

With various inlet, exhaust and turbo modifications, B&B has squeezed 362bhp out of the 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine.

The result is a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds - the same as an R8 - and a top speed of 175mph. That's 12mph shy of Audi's supercar.
