i knew some of the wide angle lenses in P&S's suffer from some barrel distortion, but this Canon SD870IS is pretty bad. how often do some of you have to compensate for it using PS (or whatever your preferred tool is)?

not very often really. try a higher f/stop number, see if that helps.

That could only be better if it was a Don't Mess With Texas sign that said "Put Little in its place"

thx mac

When you process RAW to JPEG you'll have to adjust some levels and tone to get extra colour contrast. It's a digital negative you have to develop/process,

I used Photoshop to get decent duotones, but that involved quite a few steps. It's easier to use Lightroom. In the Develop modus you can easily change colour presets that'll match your taste. I just discovered a few days ago that many people share their colour presets that you can import in Lightroom. There are presets that mimic Velvia colour film, the look of the movie 300, cross processing from the analogue era, etc.

nice shots of bangkok btw.

Here's a pic of a Buddha in Bangkok I took in 2004 with an old 3 MP Olympus snapshotcam that I just processed in Lightroom. It's high contrast, with lots of black and vignetting, compared to the more colourful original. It has a completely different atmosphere now. Took me about 3 seconds to adjust all the levels and tone

I use CS3 aswell, there are some duotone tutorials on youtube, but can't find any good ones. If you find a good one or care to explain, please share :)

In photoshop you change colour mode from RGB to grayscale, select 8bit/channel then chose Duotone. There are presets in the PS3 directory and you should chose Pantone for example to get a nice duotone.

Or you could use Lightroom and have it done in 2 secs
