Gutted, the hard drive on my computer has died. Just tested it in another pc in slave mode. It's not even spinning up or recognised in the Bios. Simply gutted. All my alpha maps gone, all the software I've purchased online gone, all my photos gone, emails, web stuff,, etc .. just gone. ... Whilst I'm really down at the moment, I know things could be far worst in life than just losing a hard drive and everything on it.... And of course some of it over time could be rebuilt whilst over stuff is simply lost for good. .... for now though I simply don't have the heart for it. It may be sometime if at all before I am able to share a map with you guys or even download and provide feedback on others maps.
I wish you all well for now .. ... hopefully I be back but it may be sometime.
That sucks. Hope everything works out for you and you'll bounce back like a mapper with a vengeance. I know I'm saying this to you in hindsight, but you should still buy yourself a backup drive, relatively cheap these days and having a backup of all your stuff is invaluable.
If the motor is not spinning up, it may not be recognised by the BIOS. Perhaps, it's possible to mount a new motor to it in order to retrieve your data. I have no idea how much such a repair would cost though.
Thanks for the kind words guys, I've already looked at repair / complete hard disk failure recovery companies and frankly the cost is way beyond the means. At some stage in the future I'll get myself a couple of drives and start afresh .. till then I'm resigned to surfing the net on my works laptop. Like I said it's not the end of the world, and I'll get over it .. for now I'll just consider it an enforced break from the PC.
I went through that same thing about three years back on an old pentium2 computer without having burned anything onto disc. Talk about major anxiety/depression that I don't think they make a pill strong enough for! Especially when considering the amount of work a person puts into Q3A editting and other thing..I lost out on three years of major work and files made by others that I could not recover.
Slowly over the last three years I've recovered and re-done things better than what I had done before. It took me a while to get myself back into it initially when it happened, but I guess I love this damn game too much. =) ..felt it to be worth it. I was definitely pissed off for quite a while over it.
Whether you come back or not..it's been nice doing some work with you..and you definitely can make a good map. Take it easy.
Gonna try and source two new drives and ghost one onto the other one when I'm up and running again. Cold light of day and all that, all I've probably lost a few license keys for software I bought on line (some I may be able to persuade the companies to resend to me - others I'll have to buy again), some emails, some work in progress maps, and some photos / pictures. Pretty much every thing else I have lying around on disk or on other peoples / family members pc's. Will I be back ... yeah sure of course I will ... might be a little while .. but I'll be back.
Cheers once again for the words of support, and it's good to know I'm not the only one who's been through this.
I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it .. I'm about to lose control and I think I like it .....
Lo folks,
Well I'm back up and running. Still installing stuff ... the good news is most of my bits were backed up onto my second HD anyway.... result!!! (so I've not lost that much).
Anyways, I'll be installing bits and pieces for a while... so it may be a little while longer before I'm fully back to mapping and playing again. But I'm on my way ...
