Texas oilman using the Bible as a guide to drill for oil

Post by tnf »

Why doesn't this surprise me...

"KIBBUTZ MAANIT, Israel - A Texas oilman is using his Bible as a guide to finding oil in the Holy Land.

John Brown, a born-again Christian and founder of Zion Oil & Gas of Dallas, can quote chapter and verse about his latest drilling venture in Israel, where his company has an oil and gas exploration license covering 96,000 acres.

“Most blessed of sons be Asher. Let him be favored by his brothers and let him dip his foot in oil,” Brown quotes from Moses’s blessing to one of the 12 Tribes of Israel in Deuteronomy 33:24.

Standing next to a 177-foot derrick at Kibbutz Maanit in northern Israel, Brown said the passage indicated there is oil lying beneath the biblical territory of the Tribe of Asher, where the agricultural community is located."

The scary thing is most of them think their money is a direct result of being blessed by God for the "Christian" lives they've led, which motivates them to be more "Christian". I use quotes around "Christian" because most of them are living lives about as far removed from the actual teachings of CHRIST (whom the whole thing is supposed to be about) as possible.

Instead, they will use it as motivation to shove their old-testament biblical idolatry down everyone's throat.

It really disturbs me that so many people are so stupid. I've thought for years that we were moving ahead and then shit like this creeps up on you to remind you that the dark ages legacy still lives on today in the modern computer age.

Trust me...its getting worse. The push to teach creationism is growing again...now we dress it up with fancy terms like "intelligent design" - which is a complete joke of a theory....
The truth is, evolution is not the result of a bunch of scientists who want to kill religion. There are millions of religious scientists who believe completely in evolution and see no problem in having faith and believing in evolution.

But under this administration, science is being politicized and 'religionized' like never before. Scientists are vetted for their religious and political beliefs...we are finally starting to see scientists begin to mobilize and start a full frontal attack on creationism and the like in the science classroom.

They like putting warning stickers on our biology textbooks to encourage students to 'view evolution with an open mind and realize it is just one of many theories' (which it isn't...it is really the ONLY explanation..there are debates about how evolution occurred, but none on the fact that it did.) A good sticker to put on textbooks about optics might be "warning: dark ages in mirror may be closer than they appear." (that isn't my own comment).

Nothing. Correlative or coincidental. He is looking at an area that is fairly rich in oil reserves to begin with (the middle east).

Well written piece.

I've noticed, within the sciences, that there tend to be more conservative republican creationist types in the physical sciences - generally ones like physics and inorganic chemistry, or even geology in some cases...areas where they don't have to get into the inherent 'messiness' of biology and the seemingly random nature of evolution. Sticking to those physical sciences, governed by what they perceive to be hard and fast laws, suits them better. That isn't say that the majority of scientists in those fields are conservative Holy rollers...just that I have found those areas are the ones the bible thumper scientists tend to fall into...

Heh.. I just read this in the editorial section of the paper today. Good article, but just like every other one like it, they don't affect those complaining. I went to a fairly conservative Christian college and as expected, many profs were also conservative. You just tend to navigate toward areas of your interest. It's not a conspiracy, but you can't explain this to people who think it is.
