Nikon D40X, Canon EOS 400D or something else?

Post by horton »

I have been considering replacing my old Canon S50 for a while, and the January sales seem as good a time as any to do so.

I was looking at the Canon EOS 400D which is either the Digital Rebel XTi or EOS Kiss Digital X depending where you live, but then I noticed and read up on the Nikon D40X

Ive been offered the following approx prices.

Nikon D40X with ED 18-55mm F3.5-5.6GII lens $538 US

as above plus ED 55-200mm F4-5.6G lens $690 US

Canon EOS plus EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 II lens $627 US

as above plus EF55-200mm F4.5-5.6 II lens $744 US

I would love a week or so to play with both the Canon and Nikon, but of course that isn't an option.

It seems that the 18-55mm lens that comes with the Canon isn't so great, while the 18-55mm that comes with the Nikon is not bad at all.

The Canon has a few features that I would like, however I'm doubting the lens that comes with it, and for a little more than the Canon with one lens, I could get the Nikon with 2.

Any opinions? Canon or Nikon? 1 lens or 2? and yes I can get body only for both cameras, but I don't want to make this more complicated than it has to be, and I am assuming that buying separate body/lens is the expensive way to do things.

I put the prices in US$ but I do live in Japan, do I don't really need links to someone with cheap prices - I could get cheaper prices if I go to Tokyo, these prices are just a general guide.

the both the same really. I'm not a fan of nikon because of the menu system and the feel (feels too cheap IMO)

the kit lens on the canon is shite but it does off the better build quality.

as for the photos, you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart with a good lens on.

I always tell anyone buying a SLR, find a shop that will let you hold them first.

All the shops I've been to have display models that you can play with.

I'm drawn towards the Canon, mainly because every digital camera I've had has been a Canon (and I've been impressed with them all so far) but I'm also drawn towards the cheaper price of the Nikon.

Do you think the 2 lens kit is worth the extra cash?

to be honest, i don't because i know they are all shit (IMO)

but.... at a starter kit they're OK and at this point in time i doubt you would notice the difference from the kit lens to a £1000 lens.

I would go Canon for obvious reasons. Sat, dmmh and FX all have Nikons so it might be worth waiting to hear from them before you buy.

One point though, the camera size you're looking at is very small. i had a Canon 350 and i got rid because i couldn't stand how small it felt.

I know it's a larger and more expensive camera than what you're looking at. I would do what Doombrain said and go try, test, feel them before your final decision. See if the camera store will make a deal with you on the camera and lens combo. I got $100 off the lens by doing that and I didn't get the crappy lens it was supposed to come with.

Taking those pictures with my cell phone doesn't do it justice.
For an SLR it's smaller than most. Not as small as the Nikon 40x

the cell phone has nothing to do with it. i'm using the writing utensil as reference. it's quite smaller width-wise than i thought it would be.

Yeah, you're right it's about as wide as a Mechanical Pencil.

My thinking on that is that they were trying to keep the weight down. Body only it's pretty light. It's nice when you're walking around and taking a lot of pictures it doesn't rip your arm off.

A friend of mine has the D40x, it's a great little camera. Another friend has the EOS 400D, he shoots great pictures with it.
The DPreview site sums it up nicely about the 2 cams.

Nice, my father has the D80. I almost convinced him to swap it with my D50 :D

SB-600 It's a nice flash. It will keep up with the camera in multiple shot mode. :)
