Urban Terror's Popularity is Growing Again!

Post by Headshot »

If you have never heard of or played Urban Terror, you should really check it out. Urban Terror is a modification for Quake3 that was originally made back in 2000. Since its creation it has gone through many changes and updates, making it one of the best Q3 mods ever made. It has all of the same great attributes that made Q3 so popular, but adds a unique look and feel to the game. Urban Terror has turned the fictional, futuristic look of Q3 into a more modern and real looking game, using weapons modeled after real weapons used today, and maps of actual locations.

Since its re-release back on April 1st 2007, its popularity has been growing once again, adding more players and servers to choose from than the mod had seen in years. Before its re-release, the game was almost dead, providing less than 100 servers to choose from and probably fewer than 100 players to play against. Now there are almost 300 servers, and more than 700 active players playing the game.

Although the numbers are growing, the mod still lacks the participation it really needs to become the great competition game it once was. There are a number of people in the UrT community that are actively trying to promote and rebuild the popularity of the game. Daily discussions are taking place in hopes to find ways to help bring in new players and bring back old players.

If you are an old Urban Terror player that left due to lack of popularity, you should really consider checking it out again. The current growth and activity reminds me of when it was first released back in 2000. It was slow at first, but quickly grew into a huge community of players and clans. The same is happening right now! Clans are forming, leagues are filling up, and ladders are being created to help generate some great competition for gamers.

This game is free to download and play, and since it's built around Q3; it's playable for the average users who aren't fortunate enough to have the newest, top of the line computers.

Actually a few weeks ago when I got my new vid card and monitor I fired up q3, set the custom res for widescreen, and turned on every graphic trick I could find. I was suprised at how good it still looks, at least with default maps that were designed to show it off (lots of the cpm, 3wave, and osp maps don't look as good). Even more impressive when you remember it's nearing a decade since release... a decade with incredible advances in graphics hardware.

Me too. It will be going in my new rig.

If someone could please confirm it does work on a 64 bit machine that would be nice :D

Is there a new version out or something? Last version was unplayably slow.

700 players on 300 servers = 2.33 players per server

You know that's not a fair conclusion to make. People will flock together on servers. If you take 8 players per server (which is quite a fair amount for Urban Terror. Even 3 vs 3 is good), then you'd have nearly 90 servers filled.

No, that means there are some empty servers. It's usually pretty easy to find a server to play on now, compared to last year where you were lucky to find one.

I installed and played 4 rounds. My opinion?

If this was 5 years ago, I would play it. But I have Call of Duty 4 now.

Hey, where's that video of your bike being stolen that you promised to post, and were promising to post until you started deleting your posts for no reason claiming other people were doing it?

Turbine, are you aware that the people that post here have absolutely ridiculous memories and you will most likely be reminded about the promises you made for a very long time to come?
