gangstarr were pretty good for early nineties stuff. had moved on to dance music before hearing of things like snoop so i missed out on all that.

in the hardcore ghettos where i used to skate (filled with large well-maintained georgian buildings, volvos and wide, tree-lined pavements) ice-t, nwa, bdp and public enemy were the order of the day. no-one needs to feel too hypocritical about that - it was people like me buying 'it takes a nation' on the way back from fencing classes that kept flavor flav in rocks.

doggy style was a disappointment after listening to him on the chronic and on the deep cover sound track song. i remembering thinking he was gonna come hella hard with it and then being kinda let down. LMFAO and i went to tower records at 12 and stood in line to get it too. kinda embarrassing now cuz i would just download that shit, im super e-gangster.

mobb deep ftw!

The Hell on Earth album was just completely on the mark with nearly every song so being very close to perfection... Listening to it gives one the same kind of feeling that one gets from smoking a joint in the pleasure of a warm & comfy home whilst watching it rain heavily outside, it's a mysterious mixture of ice cold beats, warm spaced out sounds and great rap. It's interesting because in this same period the Wu Tang released some of their best work, Redman was on it with his stuff and so were countless other people... the mid to late nineties was the glory days of hip hop, for me at least.

Redman is also a hero by the way... I once saw him at a free attendance benefit for something-or-another concert and after doing a full one and a half hour of great performance he basically refused to stop. The crazy bastard ignored frantic pleas from people of the organization to cease – there were other artists lined up and he was stealing their time - and this went on for about 15 minutes, when they finally succeeded in cutting the sound of the music. But Redman remained unphased, mostly because he had a wireless mic that was apparently more difficult to turn off... and in an effort to escape the inevitable he jumped into the crowd seeking refuge and free beer, all the while doing a freestyle rap thing.

It didn't last very long of course, but it was profoundly hilarious at the time I tell you :!:
