There's rumor of a quad G5 in development. Apple's developer tools have options for more than two processors, but screenshots have shown them running on dual processor machines. Just think about a quad dual-core machine....whew!
(lets just hope they can get dual PCIe SLI cards going in it at some point. )

Notice how the apps WITH multithread support absolutely trounce the FX?
More and more apps will implement this over time, and it will get easier as the API's begin to handle that for the programmers.
Will AMD release dual core processors? Of course. They're followers.
AMD has been preparing multi-core 64 bit processing since 1999. The AMD64 platform was designed for multi-core operation right from the start. Some people speculate that the shorter pipeline of the AMD64 chip is better suited for dual core operation than Intel's long pipeline. That, plus the fact that AMD processors doesn't run as hot and at lower MHz indicate that they have a clear advantage over Intel.
Fuck, if you put two Prescott cores that run at 3,4 GHz next to each other, you'll gonna have to dissipate 200W of heat at full load. That requires one helluva large heatsink.
