Going on a cruise..
Re: Going on a cruise..
For Cozumel, unless you are in to the historical stuff, just avoid the excursions and hit a local beach. Then party @ Carlos & Charlie's. Careful you don't get left behind, though. The ship is probably on GMT-4 and Cozumel uses GMT-5. Don't use the bar clocks, you'll get back to the dock an hour after the ship has left.

Re: Going on a cruise..
I have heard from others that Carlos & Chariles was the party spot.
But I doubt we'll be doing much partying with the kid.

Ahhh... yeah. That's not exactly a family friendly place.

Re: Going on a cruise..
I've never been on a cruise, but the idea doesn't really appeal to me. I like being able to decide what I want to do at every point in my vacation, and I'd much rather spend a few days trapped on St. John than on a boat cruising around the islands and stopping occasionally. The only way I can imagine that I would really enjoy a cruise is if it was to watch whales and/or great white sharks breaching.
Still, a lot of people love them, a couple friends of mine went on a Carribean cruise last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Have fun.

Re: Going on a cruise..
Well I'm back, like anyone cares. Though we all had a good time, the time we were given at the ports of call wasn't really enough to do or see much. Cozumel and the Caymans looked a lot like Florida from what we got to see, so they weren't that impressive to us. There's obviously lots of shopping and deals to be had if you're looking for silver, diamonds, liquor or tobacco products. But if you want to get past the swarm of vendors and stores that sell basically the same thing, you've got to book an excursion. As a matter fact, that was the best part of our trip IMO.
In the Caymans my son and I went on a turtles and stingray excursion. They took us by bus to a sea turtle farm were they had several different types of sea turtles. Though we didn't get to spend much time there, we got to feed and hold green reef turtles. After the turtles it was off to meet a bus that took us to a boat on the other side of the island. When we arrived, we got on a boat that tooks us 3 1/2 miles off shore to a sand bar where hundreds of stingrays were swarming in anticipation of being fed. We were given some snorkel gear, got in the water and were allowed to swim with, feed and hold various stingrays. It was pretty amazing to see all of these wild stingrays up close and personal. When I say personal, I mean these things were all over us. Bumping into us from every side and swimming between ours legs. It was really hard to avoid stepping on them.
All in all the trip was good. The ship was really clean and the food was good. But they didn't have a whole lot of things for kids to do which made for early nights and mornings for us. The small room and expensive alcohol was a bit of a turn off as well. If we ever do go on another cruise, we'll book a larger room (trust me, it'll be worth it), leave the kid at home and be more creative about smuggling liquor on.

Yeah, I put some Jack in a couple of 12 ounce water bottles and got them on. But the wife put vodka in a 2 liter sprite bottle and they found it. We had to wait until the end of the cruise to get it back.

Re: Going on a cruise..
that sounds like a pretty fucking good vacation actually. well, apart from the boat part. i remember as a kid going from north to south island in NZ on the ferry, which is slightly more exciting on account of the hurricane force westerly that blows thru the cook strait, but even with the entertainment of trying to keep my lunch down it got old pretty fastYourGrandpa wrote:Well I'm back, like anyone cares. Re: Going on a cruise..
Amazingly enough none of us got sea sick. We brought dramamine just in case, but never used it. In fact, my wife and son were nearly immune to the ship's movement. I felt it a little bit from time to time, but it wasn't enough to make me sick. The weird thing is getting over my sea legs now that I'm on land. If I'm standing up and turn my head, it feels like the room tilts a bit.

Re: Going on a cruise..
I wouldn't say it sucked. But we would have enjoyed the destinations more if we were staying there.
We're going to go back to Cozumel next year and stay in an all-inclusive resort. All the food and booze you can consume, right on the beach. Now that should be fun.

Re: Going on a cruise..
Why not stay in a small hotel or a bed and breakfast? It'll be cheaper, and you get to feel like you're living there for a few days. That's what we did in the Virgin Islands, and I loved it.

water bottle plastic is not spec'ed for that.Fender wrote:We put vodka in water bottles and super glued the caps shut.YourGrandpa wrote:...and be more creative about smuggling liquor on.

At your request I put together a little clip of our trip.

Re: Going on a cruise..
Were any docks in Cozumel still destroyed from the 2005 hurricanes?

Cozumel looked pretty good from what I was able to see. The Caymans were still under construction.
Re: Going on a cruise..
I enjoyed your clip too. Thanks!!!

My kids college is paid for, but I thank you for your concerns. However, I like being waited on when I'm on vacation. Not having to cook, having drinks served to me beach/pool side and being close to the action are all part of what I call a vacation. I'm not interested in renting someone's house/apartment for a week.
