What's the best tool
What's the best tool
for gathering all the information and data on a PC. so installed components, versions, software, drivers etc?
Re: What's the best tool
Is this for someone whos computer illiterate? Someone who knows "basics"
Or someone thats "in the know"?
I ask, because how hard is it to look at control panel and regedit? I mean, seriously.
Software versions, SHOULD all be dependant on themselves. So outside applications i wouldnt think could read that info.

Re: What's the best tool
this is for someone who designs software/hardware, only they are in Japan and the hardware they need the data off is with me in the UK.
I need to make it as clean and easy as possible because talking to japan about stuff is like talking to people on mars.

Windows Update on VISTA checks for driver and firmware updates for your PC components, cool huh?Doombrain wrote:for gathering all the information and data on a PC. so installed components, versions, software, drivers etc?
Re: What's the best tool
If I remember correctly, Win98 and XP did that too, but for only a limited set of drivers and they were usually older than the newest releases.Turbine wrote:Windows Update on VISTA checks for driver and firmware updates for your PC components, cool huh?Doombrain wrote:for gathering all the information and data on a PC. so installed components, versions, software, drivers etc?

And i said it's for a bit of hardware that's over 9000 miles away from the person that needs it. Way to understand, network admin.SOAPboy wrote:

You edited that in you faggot.
Re: What's the best tool
Hypothetical situation:
You work for a decent sized company, designing hardware solutions to use on desktop PCs. Your product will need to run on 3000 PCs, with various software/hardware configurations. You want to test for any major compatibility roadblocks, so you want a good amount of data about your target PCs.
You're probably right, SOAP. Going around looking at "regedit" is the best bet.

Re: What's the best tool
Give them a time-bombed beta and let them test it out.
Re: What's the best tool
You know, it's crazy, but that scenario sounds very probable. I mean, it could actually happen! I will disagree with you, though. I don't think regedit is the best solution. I know I'm going against SOAPboy's expert advice here, but I guess I'm just crazy like that.creep wrote:Hypothetical situation:

So, to answer your question Doombrain, Soapboy is the biggest tool.
