XNA Game Developement

Post by Deathshroud »

So I read about this in Xbox magazine, and figured some of you other developers would be interested.

XNA

Microsoft XNA is composed of industry-leading software, services, resources, and communities focused on enabling game developers to be successful on Microsoft gaming platforms.

XNAs been getting big lately over the past few months at http://www.gamedev.net/ on the game programming forums. A lot of people have been tinkering with C# so they can make it easy to port over to XNA and play on their xbox.

I don't understand why they want to charge $100/year to develop stuff for their console. If it was free, I'd play around with it.

I think it's something to do with liscencing... However, I think you can charge for XNA games made by users if you want to.

XNA is a load of wank. They charge you $100 a year to be able to play games on your own 360 that you built using free tools on the PC. That $100 does NOT allow you to sell your game on Live, sell your game to friends, or even let anyone without an XNA membership play.

Wow, that does blow. So what the hell is the point of developing any XBLA type games then? Just so you can play them for your own amusment?

Yeah, exactly. They should make the entire dev kit free and specify that if you sell it, it must be done through the marketplace and Microsoft takes x% of the sales. Or you can give it away w/o any sales. Not sure how to distribute it then.

I was going to join a large team not long ago where we were making a game for XBLA, which to put it simply, was pretty much DKC2 from the snes, but in HD, with obviously different things our own level set, but you know, same gameplay and style, same awards like DK style coins and the like. Would of been great for live.

However, when all 11 of us found out we EACH had to buy XNA, and then we couldn't even send files to each other that simply either, plus add to the fact that if for some reason your game DOES get published, you have to fork out a shit load of cash again... We just said sod it...

The problem with XNA is funding and licencing. To make your game, to test your game, that should be free. You should be able to send it to anybody, anywhere, and whenever the hell you like. Maybe you should only use it on PC, or maybe you would need to be networked up to the PC, or some shit...

I dunno, either way, what they have now blows chunks and its quite a large reason many people wont use it :(

Sorry. I'll go back to reviewing all of these game concepts. I think there's someone at the cash register for you.

I'm not worked up at all. I just love taking the piss out of the fat cunt GKY, and love how Jackal is like shazam, he just appears out of nowhere. I'm pretty sure hes that obsessed with me, he gets an email alarm every time I post.

Seriously, its ok to be in love with me Shazam. Most people are.
