I need a new machine this year, currently on an iMac g3, 500mhz, 20gig HD, 8mg vid ram.

I cant afford a dual 5g, which leave the iMac g5, or an eMac. Neither of which has impressive vid card capabilities - not sure the iMac would run Doom3, or if q4 when its released. So I dont know what to get. I use it for word processing, porn, and q3. Well, mainly q3 tbh.

Any thoughts as to which way you would go??

So, a semi-gaming machine from apple to run Q3 pretty well and hopefully some other games at the same time. Hmmm...well, beyond the iMac option there's really only the lowest PowerMac option with the addition of an X800 video card.

The iMac probably wont do it with the next series of games. It will run q3 better, no doubt, but the powermac might be a better long term investment, I could get one from here http://www.macshack.com.au/cgi-bin/cart ... u/powermac
for around 2300 Aust dollars. Can you imagine what sort specs I could get in a PC for the same price - wanna stay mac tho :P

Yeah, I'd say start with the basic PowerMac with the Geforce5200 and then upgrade at a later date. However I'm suspecting sooner or later they'll update the powermacs to a faster processor, in which case the prices will drop. Depends on whether or not you want to wait.
