Yanks and Brits angry about gay fairytales
Yanks and Brits angry about gay fairytales
Yesterday I saw one of the two authors of the childrens book "King and King" on TV. She cowrote a children's fairytale about a prince that, while under orders from his mother to find a princess, falls in love with another prince and ultimately marries him.
It's a children's story that's about two princes that love each other. The book mainly focusses on the love in a really classic fairytale kind of way (in a "and they lived happily after after" way). So basically it's your classic princess and prince fairytale, but this time between a prince and another prince.
Now what's happened is that this book has caused discussions in the United States and in England there's this christian organization that wants to have it banned.
I think it's a major oppertunity for parents to show their children the many diversities of love, hopefully making them more accepting towards homosexuality. What's your opinion on a book like this?
This is the book by the way: http://www.amazon.com/King-Linda-Haan/dp/1582460612

that particular book? it's stupid. how's a king going to carry on a royal line by getting his shit packed, or is there an equally politically correct follow-up story, with a child-friendly take on alternative political systems or artificial insemination and surrogacy?
on the subject in general - i read stories about irredemably evil space aliens when i was a kid, but if a bunch moved in next door to me then i wouldn't be out burning saucers on their lawn or lynching them. i understood that the stories were about making sure that someone was bad before you kicked their ass. stories about queers falling in love and it not mattering are a great idea, because they do and it doesn't. all the same, playing with traditional childhood perceptions of family is something that should be carefully considered before taking it too far - we have a lot of problems with the nature of family in this country already.
they had a thing about this on the radio the other day, because the books ('harriet the cuntpunching witchspy', 'john and gerry play hide the ball', 'mr thwappy the animal rapist' etc) are being introduced into the curriculum for some schools. the christian right were complaining, but as the presenter of the show politely pointed out, they complain about everything and no-one really gives a fuck what they think.

To be honest, they're working on a sequel where the two kings are going to adopt a child. No joke!4days wrote:that particular book? it's stupid. how's a king going to carry on a royal line by getting his shit packed, or is there an equally politically correct follow-up story, with a child-friendly take on alternative political systems or artificial insemination and surrogacy?

But I suspect the Christians are making the biggest fuss about this, so I didn't mention the others.
Yeah, the book surely describes the men having sex.Immo wrote:I don't want my kids reading a book about two princes fucking eachother in the ass. I can understand why others don't want it either.

I wouldn't want my kids reading books about men and women fucking, either, so what's the problem?
That's a fucking stupid argument. When do fairy tales ever make sense? It's a story about love, not about carrying on a blood line. How is a king going to carry on his bloodline by letting his daughter marry an ogre?4days wrote:that particular book? it's stupid. how's a king going to carry on a royal line by getting his shit packed, or is there an equally politically correct follow-up story, with a child-friendly take on alternative political systems or artificial insemination and surrogacy?
OH SHIT! STOP EVERYTHING! SHREK ISN'T A REALISTIC STORY!

Well, no, but the book wouldn't include the nature of the sex they were having. The point of the book is about same sex relationships. Fairy tales have a pretty significant influence aswell. How many young girls don't dream of being a princess in a castle in a similar fairy tale?GONNAFISTYA wrote:Would you want your kids reading about a prince who fucked a princess in the ass?Immo wrote:I don't want my kids reading a book about two princes fucking eachother in the ass. I just dont think it's the right medium to promote awareness and homosexual tolerance.

So what you're saying is that there shouldn't be any reference to sex in a "normal" relationship but gay relationship stories should include mentioning assfucking?Immo wrote:Well, no, but the book wouldn't include the nature of the sex they were having. Isn't that what you didn't want your kids to read about....assfucking?

Makes me wonder what the right age for this is, as well. My 2 yo daughter sees everything in little families. If she sees 3 rocks, the big one is the daddy, the medium one is the mommy and the little one is the baby. I don't know what the concept of "2 daddies" or "2 mommies" would mean to her. In a few years, maybe, but not quite yet.
as difficult as it might've been to notice, i wasn't being entirely serious with that post.werldhed wrote:That's a fucking stupid argument. When do fairy tales ever make sense? Nope, it won't mention assfucking and it shouldn't. Thats besides the point. I was describing the fairy tale as I see it.GONNAFISTYA wrote:So what you're saying is that there shouldn't be any reference to sex in a "normal" relationship but gay relationship stories should include mentioning assfucking?Immo wrote:Well, no, but the book wouldn't include the nature of the sex they were having. Sorry.. I thought you were using humor to make a serious point. The point was, I don't want my children being shown homo-sexuality in a fairy tale. Leave the sexual orientation issue for when children are less easily influenced and can think for themselves.GONNAFISTYA wrote:You posted this:

first off, the morons on the right are once again blowing something up beyond what is necessary. It's a stupid idea which won't go anywhere.
What you have to ask yourself is, does this really have a market? My answer is no, because for the traditional family, it brings to the table discussions which aren't really necessary for an age at which you would read to your child.
