some pikey with a couple of pitbulls once told me that the best way to unlock them from something is to punch them really hard in the arsehole - but he had some big scars on his face, so that's potentially not great advice.

Sounds horrible.

I'm of the view that only a narrow section of society is willing and/or capable of owning such dogs, keeping them reliably subdued and maintained. Perhaps that's overly restrictive, but it's shaped out of an excess of precaution.

I still think that stats should speak with authority in this area and not moral panic, though.

It has nothing to do with keeping them subdued, it has to do with proper training and socialization. The stats do speak for themselves, and more people get bitten by Chows and Dalmations every year than by Rotties or Pits. But, the media love to stir shit and get ratings, so every time something with one of the "vicious breeds" happens it's all over the news.

Only a fool trusts a dog of ANY breed completely. Yeah, Pits and Rotties are popular among the kind of people that shouldn't own them and that's bad for the breeds. But if you read the guidelines for the breed standard, any sign of aggression is HIGHLY negative. Don't malign the breed, place the blame on the shithead owners that breed intentionally for aggressive tendencies because they have small cocks.
