ever notice the 'watermarks' on ps2 discs?

i was taking digital photos of some of my ps2 games so i can hock them on ebay to make cash to get GT4... and i noticed they have these crazy "watermarks" on the data of the disc.
(at least all the DVDs do, i dont have any CD games)

kind of a copy protection / digital signature sort of deal i guess.
