I was at work today coming back to my office when I rounded the corner in our sports department. They had the tv on and Bush was speaking somewhere.
I came around just in time to hear him say "but when a difficult case like this comes up, we must always err on the side of life."
I almost threw something at the tv.
Bush is now in charge of life and death. Fucking great.

Leon Kass leads the President's Council of Bioethics and he wants the government to deny individuals the right to life extension technologies when they come about. He is anti-abortion, anti-theraputic cloning, anti-ESC research, and anti-biomedical research. He has suggested that the government stop all biomedical research until a consensus can be reached among the people. Kass supported a move to ban all cloning (including theraputic cloning) GLOBALLY in the UN. The countries couldn't agree to that, so they passed a non-binding ban (a bullshit ban, that won't be followed by countries doing such research). He claims to support finding cures for diseases as long as they don't extend the human lifespan beyond the maximum 120 years. Kass finds the possibility of people living healthy lives beyond 120 years as abhorrent and an affront to human dignity. His goals are clear, to impose his beliefs upon everyone. To paraphrase he has said that this is best for everyone, whether they know it or not.
edit: To clarify, he does not support the right of individuals to live longer lives if they choose.

PINELLAS PARK - Angered by the latest political developments in Washington, Michael Schiavo said Saturday that it isn't just the Florida governor who should visit his wife to learn about the case.
Jeb Bush's brother, President Bush, should visit Terri Schiavo, too, he said.
"Come down, President Bush," Schiavo said in a telephone interview. "Come talk to me. Meet my wife. Talk to my wife and see if you get an answer. Ask her to lift her arm to shake your hand. She won't do it."
She won't, Schiavo said, because she can't.
He made a similar offer to the governor last week, saying lawmakers interferring in his wife's life know nothing about the case. So far, Gov. Bush hasn't responded to the offer.
President Bush has indicated he will sign any federal legislation to keep Terri Schiavo alive.
Weary after an emotional visit with his wife, Schiavo said he is astonished that politicians want to interfere in such a private matter.
"Instead of worrying about my wife, who was granted her wishes by the state courts the past seven years, they should worry about the pedophiles killing young girls," Schiavo said, referring to a local case. "Why doesn't Congress worry about people not having health insurance? Or the budget? Let's talk about all the children who don't have homes."
He said U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who is leading a charge to extend Terri Schiavo's life, is a "little slithering snake" pandering for votes.
"To make comments that Terri would want to live, how do they know?" Schiavo said of the members of Congress who want to keep his wife alive.
"Have they ever met her?" Schiavo said. "What color are her eyes? What's her middle name? What's her favorite color? They don't have any clue who Terri is. They should all be ashamed of themselves."
Schiavo said he was going to stay at his wife's side through the entire ordeal and said he wouldn't back down in his fight to have her wishes carried out.
"Terri died 15 years ago," Schiavo said, referring to the collapse and cardiac arrest that doctors say virtually destroyed her brain. "It's time for her to be with the Lord like she wanted to be."

Small government when it comes to protecting anything do to with the environment (so that small business/large business owners and developers aren't hindered with all these crackpot regulations designed to save wetlands, trees, and all the other stupid, irrelevant shit like protecting our air and drinking water.)
Big government when it comes to protecting those inalienable rights of unborn children, or denying the rights of people who want to die (not necessarily regarding Schiavo here...but in general).
It's funny how they think we can rely on small government and people making good decisions to protect things like the environment and to help the poor, but that government must intervene when it comes to these other issues (steroids in baseball, etc., etc., etc.) Hypocrisy and a severe case of anthropocentric thinking...
