Autism

I'd like too see your views on autism. I find this mental condition very interesting, especially because some people who have it have interesting abilities, like doing vast mental calculations (Rainman). I'd really like to know more about this, and since some of you are doctors, maybe you could instruct me a bit

I find it very amusing.
Comes in second as most entertaining disease right after Tourettes.

I've heard not too long ago that brain inflammation was linked to autism :paranoid:

My little brother was diagnosed with mild autism when he was younger. Other than being a quiet kid though you probably wouldn't know unless you were very familiar on the subject. It's definitely not something I'd want to have though.

This is strange because I was just having this conversation yesterday.

An interesting thing to note is, most mammals have a natural autism. It becomes evident when you study deer, squirrels, dogs, chimps.

Studies have been done that treat autism with physical pressure on the body. It has a calming effect on people with the condition, and even has completely cured some.

You can jab at me if you want but in all seriousness I've always treated him the same as my other little brother.

I never treated him any different than I would anyone else and he's just as capable as anyone I know, in fact I'd say he's made me proud to be his big brother cause he's a pretty good kid.

He's huge though, (different fathers) I'm 5'9, he's 6'4. He jog's and works out every day and is insanely strong, in fact he was in the New Brunswick Arm Wrestling competition and finished 3rd or 4th I beleive in the the Adult category. He was only 17 at the time which is very impressive I've been told. I'm pretty proud of him anyway.

an excerpt:
Daniel Tammet is an autistic savant. He can perform mind-boggling mathematical calculations at breakneck speeds. But unlike other savants, who can perform similar feats, Tammet can describe how he does it. He speaks seven languages and is even devising his own language. Now scientists are asking whether his exceptional abilities are the key to unlock the secrets of autism. Interview by Richard Johnson

My wife's oldest son is autistic. He's not like the savants. He has a really good memory most of the time and he communicates pretty well. He also tends to notice some things the rest of us don't right off.

edit: In fact they said he may have aspergers.

great article.

Tammet is calculating 377 multiplied by 795. Actually, he isn't "calculating": there is nothing conscious about what he is doing. He arrives at the answer instantly. Since his epileptic fit, he has been able to see numbers as shapes, colours and textures. The number two, for instance, is a motion, and five is a clap of thunder. "When I multiply numbers together, I see two shapes. The image starts to change and evolve, and a third shape emerges. That's the answer. It's mental imagery. It's like maths without having to think."
wow, just wow.

yeah, from what i know from the book that sounds pretty much like aspergers to me. Though he also doesnt like it when people touch him or large crowds near him. It makes him curl up in a ball and throw up, but he tends to not remember most of it, he describes it like a film he's watching. He can see himself like hes watching a film of himself.

Hello my friend.

Do you live with an autistic child?
I hope not or I hope you have a great great patience, understanding.

My girl friend's daughter is almost 18YO but with a brain
(analyzed by the experts in that field) of a 2 to 3 YO child.

So, imagine what a 2 to 3YO child can do by himself...
She doesn't want to brush her teeth by herself.
She has a kind of phobia about washing her hands,
we have to force her to wash her hands and she is shrieking
as if someone was violating her, same with brushing her hair.
If she try to get dress by herself, she doesn't only mix colors but
will put her pants backward even her socks with the hill
on top of her feet. Shoes on wrong foot...

In the morning when her mother wake her up, she start yelling
and could last till the bus arrive eg 1HR long.
Some morning she doesn't want to eat anything not even drinking.
Other mornings, specially if we have some pizza left over, she
will explorate the fridge to find it and eat it all.
She can take spaghetti, olives, pikles,cheese...pizza, cake, with juice, soda, milk, all over the table for breakfast.
Once everything is on the table and that her mother has reheat it,
She goes back to her bedroom, sometimes not having touch a thing of it all.
Imagine also, she is a lady. She can't wipe her butt, her mother has to do it, as bathing her, so when she is mentruate it's the same thing. She didn't want to wear her kotex...I found a solution...
Now she wears a diaper. It works so good that even when she is not menstruate she still want to wear one.
When she want to see her sister, she says something like nany nany
nany maison, she keep saying it for hundred of times without stopping except for a few loud yelling from time to time.
And you don't want to see her when she is mad. She tear up everything around, her clothes, towel, shower curtain...
When I met my girl friend, she showed me a full boxe with broken
head phone and walkman...That was only from the past 6 months.
I found a solution, Wireless head phone, Because she used to brake the cable mostly.

She knows around 50 words that she can't pronounce correctly.
For her, cold or hot is only hot, down an up is up.
Everything that make noise is a car even a lawnmower.

I'll finish on a positive note. She is good with puzzles, she
has a high visual capability. She has like 500+ figurines in
her bedroom. We had to move the bedroom around and we put them all in boxes, when she arrived from school, she replaced
them all within 15 minutes in the exact same place. She will
notice right away if there is one missing.

Well I'll stop for now.

For your interest, there are plenty of sites on the web, just Google.
Here is one from her school and the other from a google search.

I wish I was a savant. It takes me a really long time to read text, not like Kim Peek:
Peek can read two pages simultaneously, one with each eye. He can also recall, in exact detail, the 7,600 books he has read.

Yeah that's pretty close. He doesn't like to be touched or crowds. But he doesn't go so far as to throw up, just gets real cranky. He can work, he's had a job as a busboy at a steakhouse for a few months. He'll never live on his own though.

wow. i know someone with austism who queued for harry potter 5 the night it came out (about midnight) then managed to stay up and read it in 2 hours of purchasing the book. not as amazing but still quite fast considering the thickness of the book.

Theres a difference between just reading text and reading a book while understanding and fully enjoying it though.

Pete, taking care of an 18 year old autistic woman must be remarkably draining for your gf.
