I did a little looking into it. Mini DV is the best format IMO. I bought a Panasonic nv-gs180 for £330, Panasonic are one of the only makes that use the 3CCD system. That and mini DV make for broadcast quality and I can edit it all on the PC, convert to other formats and backup to DVD.
It’s very small and easy to use. You can even buy a battery that will last for three hours of recording time.
